Above and Beyond is the third residence in a four-home collection in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Originally the site of the abandoned Kachina Elementary School, the infill community, appropriately named Kachina Estates, embraces the remarkable views of Camelback Mountain. Nestled into an acre sized pie shaped cul-de-sac lot, the lot geometry and front facing view orientation created a remarkable privacy challenge and influenced the forward facing facade and massing. An iconic, stone-clad massing wall element rests within an oversized south-facing fenestration, creating separation and privacy while affording views “above and beyond.” Above and Beyond has Mid-Century DNA married with a larger sense of mass and scale. The pool pavilion bridges from the main residence to a guest casita which visually completes the need for protection and privacy from street and solar exposure. The pie-shaped lot which tapered to the south created a challenge to harvest south light. This was one of the largest spatial organization influencers for the design. The design undulates to embrace south sun and organically creates remarkable outdoor living spaces. This modernist home has a palate of granite and limestone wall cladding, plaster, and a painted metal fascia. The wall cladding seamlessly enters and exits the architecture affording interior and exterior continuity. Kachina Estates was named an Award of Merit winner at the 2019 Gold Nugget Awards in the category of Best Residential Detached Collection of the Year. The annual awards ceremony was held at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference in San Francisco, CA in May 2019. Powder room with table style vanity that was fabricated in our exclusive Bay Area cabinet shop. Ann Sacks Clodagh Shield tiled wall adds interest to this very small powder room that had previously been a hallway closet.

A secondary hallway leads into a guest wing which features the powder room. The decorative tile flooring of the entryway and the kitchen was intentionally run into the powder room. The cabinet which features an integrated white glass counter/sink was procured from a specialized website. An Arabian silver-leafed mirror is mounted over a silk-based wall covering by Phillip Jeffries.

This formerly dull powder room was part of a whole house remodel. The overall concept for the home was to bring in natural, organic colors and elements and to reference stone, metals, wood, trees, and leaves. A powder room is always a great canvas on which to build a dramatic scene and the amazing sliced agate wallpaper for this powder room fits that bill perfectly. Updating of this Venice Beach bungalow home was a real treat. Timing was everything here since it was supposed to go on the market in 30day. (It took us 35days in total for a complete remodel). The corner lot has a great front "beach bum" deck that was completely refinished and fenced for semi-private feel. The entire house received a good refreshing paint including a new accent wall in the living room. The kitchen was completely redo in a Modern vibe meets classical farmhouse with the labyrinth backsplash and reclaimed wood floating shelves. Notice also the rugged concrete look quartz countertop. A small new powder room was created from an old closet space, funky street art walls tiles and the gold fixtures with a blue vanity once again are a perfect example of modern meets farmhouse.

BeachHaus is built on a previously developed site on Siesta Key. It sits directly on the bay but has Gulf views from the upper floor and roof deck. The client loved the old Florida cracker beach houses that are harder and harder to find these days. They loved the exposed roof joists, ship lap ceilings, light colored surfaces and inviting and durable materials. Given the risk of hurricanes, building those homes in these areas is not only disingenuous it is impossible. Instead, we focused on building the new era of beach houses; fully elevated to comfy with FEMA requirements, exposed concrete beams, long eaves to shade windows, coralina stone cladding, ship lap ceilings, and white oak and terrazzo flooring. The home is Net Zero Energy with a HERS index of -25 making it one of the most energy efficient homes in the US. It is also certified NGBS Emerald. Photos by Ryan Gamma Photography
