Designed by Lauren Hunt of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Charlotte, NC, in collaboration with The Atta Group, this mid-century/transitional kitchen & bar features Merillat Masterpiece cabinets in the Levan shaker door style with a Rainfall finish. Kitchen countertops are Hanstone Strato, complemented by a Bally Butcherblock bar countertop in teak. “The clients were a dream to work with! We have similar design taste, so it made for a really effortless and smooth design process!” said Hunt. “Their original kitchen was much smaller, so much of our discussion was centered on making the new space they had functional and efficient. We used quite a few pullouts and drawer accessories to help keep their storage space organized.” “I was thrilled that they’ve broke away from the whites and gray painted cabinets we’ve been seeing by selecting Masterpiece’s Rainfall paint and incorporating some warmer finishes. In this kitchen up in Desert Mountain, we provided all of the cabinetry, countertops and backsplash to create the Mid Century Modern style for our clients remodel. The transformation is substantial compared to the size and layout it was before, making it more linear and doubling in size. For the perimeter we have white skinny shaker cabinetry with pops of Hickory wood to add some warmth and a seamless countertop backsplash. The island features painted black cabinetry with the skinny shaker style for some contrast and is over 14' long with enough seating for 8 people. In the fireplace bar area, we have also the black cabinetry with a fun pop of color for the backsplash tile along with honed black granite countertops. The selection choices of painted cabinetry, wood tones, gold metals, concrete flooring and furniture selections carry the style throughout and brings in great texture, contrast and warmth.

After being vacant for years, this property needed extensive repairs and system updates to accommodate the young family who would be making it their home. The existing mid-century modern architecture drove the design, and finding ways to open up the floorplan towards the sweeping views of the boulevard was a priority. Custom white oak cabinetry was created for several spaces, and new architectural details were added throughout the interior. The new porch was insulated and incorporated into the overall space. The kitchen remodel was part of a whole house remodel so new quarter sawn oak flooring, a vaulted ceiling, windows and skylights were added. A large calcutta marble topped island takes center stage. It houses a 5’ galley workstation - a sink that provides a convenient spot for prepping, serving, entertaining and clean up. A 36” induction cooktop is located directly across from the island for easy access. Two appliance garages on either side of the cooktop house small appliances that are used on a daily basis. Honeycomb tile by Ann Sacks and open shelving along the cooktop wall add an interesting focal point to the room. Antique mirrored glass faces the storage unit housing dry goods and a beverage center. “I chose details for the space that had a bit of a mid-century vibe that would work well with what was originally a 1950s ranch. Along the way a previous owner added a 2nd floor making it more of a Cape Cod style home, a few eclectic details felt appropriate”, adds Klimala. The wall opposite the cooktop houses a full size fridge, freezer, double oven, coffee machine and microwave. “There is a lot of functionality going on along that wall”, adds Klimala. A small pull out countertop below the coffee machine provides a spot for hot items coming out of the ovens. The rooms creamy cabinetry is accented by quartersawn white oak at the island and wrapped ceiling beam. The golden tones are repeated in the antique brass light fixtures. “This is the second kitchen I’ve had the opportunity to design for myself. My taste has gotten a little less traditional over the years, and although I’m still a traditionalist at heart, I had some fun with this kitchen and took some chances. The kitchen is super functional, easy to keep clean and has lots of storage to tuck things away when I’m done using them. The casual dining room is fabulous and is proving to be a great spot to linger after dinner. The Murray small kitchen remodel demonstrated the immense potential of a small kitchen makeover. We started by stripping everything to the studs, enabling us to redesign the layout and make adjustments to the kitchen's overall flow. In the design layout, we closed off a doorway to allow more wall space for additional full custom cabinetry and appliances, enhancing the kitchen's functionality. We extended the counters and repositioned the refrigerator to improve the workspace and flow. The new island, highlighted with pendant lighting and set on stylish hardwood flooring, became the focal point, providing extra counter space and a gathering spot. Additional features like under-cabinet lighting, a touch-activated faucet, and a custom hood boosted the kitchen's overall appeal and practicality. Modern elements like the integrated speed oven in the island cabinetry, and the new hardwood flooring throughout, completed the transformation. The Murray kitchen remodel project successfully combined style and function, transforming a modest kitchen into a warm, inviting, and efficient space.

The homeowners, who were expecting their first child, were interested in expanding their current 2 bedroom/2 bathroom house for their growing family. They also wanted to retain the character of their 1940 era inside-the-beltline home. Wood Wise designer Kathy Walker worked with the clients on several design options to meet their list of requirements. The final plan includes adding 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a new dining room, and sunroom. The existing kitchen and dining rooms were remodeled to create a new central kitchen with a large walk-in pantry with sink. The custom aqua color of the kitchen cabinets recalls period turquoise kitchens. The exterior of the home was updated with paint and a new standing-seam metal roof to complete the remodel.
