What started as a kitchen and two-bathroom remodel evolved into a full home renovation plus conversion of the downstairs unfinished basement into a permitted first story addition, complete with family room, guest suite, mudroom, and a new front entrance. We married the midcentury modern architecture with vintage, eclectic details and thoughtful materials.

An open Mid-Century Modern inspired kitchen with ceiling details and lots of natural light. White upper cabinets and grey lower cabinets keep the space light. An orange Stove and orange counter stools pop against the neutral background. The pendant lights feel like an art installation, and the ceiling design adds drama without feeling heavy.

This classically designed mid-century modern home had a kitchen that had been updated in the1980’s and was ready for a makeover that would highlight its vintage charm. The backsplash is a combination of cement-look quartz for ease of maintenance and a Japanese mosaic tile. An expanded black aluminum window stacks open for more natural light as well as a way to engage with guests on the patio in warmer months. A polished concrete floor is a surprising neutral in this airy kitchen and transitions well to flooring in adjacent spaces.

This 1950s home was sporting elements of the original kitchen and the dark space was not meeting our client’s needs. The original kitchen didn’t have much to offer in the way of functionality, so our first order of business was to create a design that would exponentially increase the usability of the kitchen. We brought in functional cabinetry, introduced uninterrupted work surfaces, and added plenty of lighting to brighten up their kitchen. They also wanted to open the new kitchen to the living room and create space for a larger dining table, so we started by removing the existing cabinetry that was visually cut the living space in two and minimized the power of the dramatic vaulted ceiling. We also extended the wood flooring into the kitchen as well to create seamless transitions between spaces. We fell in love with the idea of a two-toned cabinetry design for this kitchen and ultimately went head over heels for clean white painted base cabinets and a textured wood-look melamine on the uppers. This gave us a crisp backdrop that allowed us to bring is fun forms like the black light fixture over the table and the gorgeous silhouettes on the hardware. We played a lot with directionality in this space. The elongated open shelves and rectangular backsplash tiles give us wonderfully clean horizontal lines, but to balance those out we brought in a vertical grain pattern on the wall cabinets and added long black cabinetry pulls that emphasize the verticality of the space. The clients have a green thumb and wanted to make sure we created a home for their growing plant collection. The open shelving gives us plenty of opportunities for foliage and to showcase fun kitchen accessories. This design feels like home and brings together the clean lines and crisp finishes our clients were looking for.

This beautiful Claremont, CA home built in 1955 got a wonderful Mid-Century Modern update to the kitchen. The fireplace adjacent to the kitchen was the inspiration for this space. Pure white brick matched with a natural “Dune” stained maple mantle. Opposite the fireplace is a display will donned with matching maple shadowbox shelving. The pure white cabinets are topped with a Cabrini Grey quartz from Arizona Tile, mimicking a combination of concrete and limestone, with a square edge profile. To accent both the countertop and the cabinets we went with brushed gold and bronze fixtures. A Kohler “White Haven” apron front sink is finished with a Delta “Trinsic” faucet in champagne bronze, with matching push button garbage disposal, soap dispenser and aerator. One of the largest changes to the space was the relocating of the plumbing fixtures, and appliances. Giving the stove its own wall, a 30” KitchenAid unit with a stainless steel hood, backed with a stunning mid-century modern rhomboid patterned mosaic backsplash going up to the ceiling. The fridge stayed in the same location, but with all new cabinetry, including an over-sized 24” deep cabinet above it, and a KitchenAid microwave drawer built into the bottom cabinets. Another drastic change was the raising of the ceiling, pulling the height up from 8 foot to 9 foot, accented with crown moldings to match the cabinetry. Next to the kitchen we included a built in accent desk, a built in nook for seating with custom leather created by a local upholsterer, and a built in hutch. Adding another window brought in even more light to a bright and now cheerful space. Rather than replace the flooring, a simple refinish of the wood planks was all the space needed blending the style of the kitchen into the look and feel of the rest of the home. Completed in 2018, this ranch house mixes midcentury modern design and luxurious retreat for a busy professional couple. The clients are especially attracted to geometrical shapes so we incorporated clean lines throughout the space. The palette was influenced by saddle leather, navy textiles, marble surfaces, and brass accents throughout. The goal was to create a clean yet warm space that pays homage to the mid-century style of this renovated home in Bull Creek. --- Project designed by the Atomic Ranch featured modern designers at Breathe Design Studio. This beautiful Mid-Century was in desperate need of updating in both form and function. Keeping the original ceilings (which had a slope we needed to mind) helped keep the 50's style. The two tone made it so that the kitchen was broken up instead of being one very long white kitchen. Adding the windows on the exterior wall completely brightened up the space too.

Modern kitchen design with high gloss cabinets mixed with subway backsplash. Wood island with grey countertops help warm up the space. Modern copper light fixtures hanging over the island provide plenty of light for gathering in the kitchen. Slanted walls leading to high ceilings with exposed beams create a great flow between kitchen and living spaces.

We remodeled the kitchen of this lovely 1950's Tujunga home. We reconfigured the kitchen with the removal of a large chimney and wall, creating an open concept layout between the kitchen, dining room, and living room. From the foyer of the home, there is now an open view of the kitchen from the living room. We removed 745 sq. of old oakwood flooring and replaced it with brand new oakwood in the kitchen. As a method to add more space, we added 172 sq. to create a nook for space to install stacked laundry units. The kitchen measures 17'5" by 18'5" and the kitchen island measure 8'3" by 5". We installed a brand new set of white shaker cabinets, gray solid surface countertops, and a beautiful white marble countertop on the island. The kitchen island can seat five people, it has a built-in wine cooler, and beautiful modern fixtures that float above the island. We also installed a brand new stovetop, hood range, dishwasher, double sink bowl, and a 3-way light dimmer switch. For lighting upgrades, we installed 12 new recessed lighting cans and an under cabinet light strip.
