The new front elevation of the Manhattan Beach Mid-Century Modern house. The original house from the 1950s was by famed architect Edward Ficket. In the 1980s a bad addition was done that hid the original house and completely changed the character.. Our goal was to revamp the entire house and in the process restore some of the mid-century magic.

The classic MCM fin details on the side yard patio had disappeared through the years and were discovered during the historic renovation process via archival photographs and renderings. They were meticulously detailed and implemented by the direction of the architect, and the character they add to the home is indisputable. While not structural, they do add both a unique design detail and shade element to the patio and help to filter the light into the home's interior. The wood cladding on the exterior of the home had been painted over through the years and was restored back to its original, natural state. Classic exterior furnishings mixed with some modern day currents help to make this a home both for entertaining or just relaxing with family.

To unify the mismatched elements of the exterior, the entire home was painted in a dark charcoal. Matt black accents were added, while a timber door provides warmth.

A remodel of a midcentury home, with family room addition, new pool and patios. MAKE drew inspiration from the existing horizontal lines of the existing midcentury residence, also complimenting those lines with the addition of vertical architectural gestures and a new family room with a heightened roof line. We site planned the home to shelter the pool and enhance the sense of privacy and as an extension of the livable area.

The owners of this mid-century post-and-beam Pasadena house overlooking the Arroyo Seco asked us to add onto and adapt the house to meet their current needs. The renovation infused the home with a contemporary aesthetic while retaining the home's original character (reminiscent of Cliff May's Ranch-style houses) the project includes and extension to the master bedroom, a new outdoor living room, and updates to the pool, pool house, landscape, and hardscape. we were also asked to design and fabricate custom cabinetry for the home office and an aluminum and glass table for the dining room. What started as a kitchen and two-bathroom remodel evolved into a full home renovation plus conversion of the downstairs unfinished basement into a permitted first story addition, complete with family room, guest suite, mudroom, and a new front entrance. We married the midcentury modern architecture with vintage, eclectic details and thoughtful materials.
