Our Austin studio decided to go bold with this project by ensuring that each space had a unique identity in the Mid-Century Modern style bathroom, butler's pantry, and mudroom. We covered the bathroom walls and flooring with stylish beige and yellow tile that was cleverly installed to look like two different patterns. The mint cabinet and pink vanity reflect the mid-century color palette. The stylish knobs and fittings add an extra splash of fun to the bathroom. The butler's pantry is located right behind the kitchen and serves multiple functions like storage, a study area, and a bar. We went with a moody blue color for the cabinets and included a raw wood open shelf to give depth and warmth to the space. We went with some gorgeous artistic tiles that create a bold, intriguing look in the space. In the mudroom, we used siding materials to create a shiplap effect to create warmth and texture – a homage to the classic Mid-Century Modern design. We used the same blue from the butler's pantry to create a cohesive effect. Midcentury Prairie Expansion

The Master Bedroom includes his-and-hers Closets and custom built-in storage drawers and shelving. The homeowner had previously updated their mid-century home to match their Prairie-style preferences - completing the Kitchen, Living and DIning Rooms. This project included a complete redesign of the Bedroom wing, including Master Bedroom Suite, guest Bedrooms, and 3 Baths; as well as the Office/Den and Dining Room, all to meld the mid-century exterior with expansive windows and a new Prairie-influenced interior. A custom platform bed floats in the middle of this modern master bedroom which is anchored by a freestanding wall constructed of quarter turned alder panels. The bed, ceiling and trim are stained a warm honey tone, providing pleasing contrast against ivory walls. Built-in floating bedside tables are serviced the by a pair of bronze pendant lights with clear seedy glass globes. A textured coverlet and shams in shades of off-white and beige are accented with dark copper pillows providing a cozy place to land at the end of a long day.

Earthy Mackay House

This 1956 John Calder Mackay home had been poorly renovated in years past. We kept the 1400 sqft footprint of the home, but re-oriented and re-imagined the bland white kitchen to a midcentury olive green kitchen that opened up the sight lines to the wall of glass facing the rear yard. We chose materials that felt authentic and appropriate for the house: handmade glazed ceramics, bricks inspired by the California coast, natural white oaks heavy in grain, and honed marbles in complementary hues to the earth tones we peppered throughout the hard and soft finishes. This project was featured in the Wall Street Journal in April 2022.

The architraves were replaced, walls lined and painted and the floorboards were repaired, sanded and stained to retain character. The interior style is mid-century modern to adhere to the period features in the property while introducing some modern pieces to refresh the space.

We transformed this added-on master bedroom by infusing the mid-century modern character of the original part of the house. This included replacing the carpet with Garrison’s Du Bois oak floors, painting the ceiling white, and installing Farrow and Ball’s Aranami wallpaper in navy and white for a feature wall. We also added lighting where there was none, and furnished the space with a mix of new and vintage mid-century pieces.

ミッドセンチュリースタイルの寝室のレイアウトで考えたいこと

おしゃれにしたい、かわいいファブリックを使いたい、落ち着いた雰囲気の空間にしたいなど、普段あまり人を招き入れることがないプライベートな寝室に求める機能や条件はそれぞれあることでしょう。ただ、どんなレイアウトの寝室であっても共通して言えることは、“なるべく部屋の構成要素を少なくする” ということです。寝る直前に情報が多すぎると脳が休まらず、快眠できないと言われていますが、ミッドセンチュリースタイルの寝室のインテリアにおいても、そういった気遣いは必要になるでしょう。カラフルすぎる、あるいは柄がやけに目に留まる壁紙や、明るすぎる電気、ごちゃごちゃとした印象の乱雑なベッドルームでは、心も身体も休まるところがありません。迷いが生じたり、要素が多くなりそうになったら、シンプル・イズ・ベストの精神に立ち帰るのが基本となりそうです。 1R（ワンルーム）マンションでもプライベートなスペースは確保しておきたいもの。寝室のレイアウトに間仕切りを用いることで人目につきにくくなります。天井の高さがある程度確保できれば、天蓋を使うという選択も部屋の印象をがらっと変える効果があります。採光も求めたいポイントのひとつ。朝の太陽の光は体をスッキリと目覚めさせる効果があると言われています。ただし、強すぎる光は暑さとの戦いになるので、遮光カーテンの導入や窓ガラスに工夫を施すといいでしょう。やわらかな陽の光を寝室全体に取り入れられるよう、設計前に業者と相談できるといいですね。

ミッドセンチュリースタイルの寝室の照明

寝室の照明を暗めに設定する人が多いですが、いったい何ワットがベストなのでしょうか。一説には8畳の部屋でトータル260ワット程度の明るさが適していると言われているそうで、雑誌などを広げたときに無理なく読める程度の明るさが目安です。また、照明の色によっても部屋の印象は大きく異なります。色温度が低く温かみのあるオレンジ色の電球色は一日の終わりにぴったりな心を落ち着かせる効果が。家族と共有の寝室であれば、先に寝ている人に対する配慮も必要です。寝室の模様替えの際に、リモコンやスマートフォンアプリなどで、手元で調光できるような仕組みをリクエストしておくといいでしょう。シーリングライトだけでなく、スタンド式、壁掛け式などの間接照明や、調光器をうまく組み合わせて明るさを自在に調整し、さらなる快適な部屋づくりを目指しましょう。

好きな香りを寝室に

ミッドセンチュリースタイルの寝室 (ベッドルーム) を真のやすらぎの空間にしたいのであれば、香りに気を使ってみるのもいいですね。ラベンダーやネロリ、スイート・オレンジの香りは、不安や緊張から心と身体をときほぐし、安眠効果をもたらします。キャンドルはうっかり消し忘れなどがあって危険なので、タイマー式や、熱源を使用しないアロマディヒューザーなどが重宝しそうです。日々のパフォーマンスに大きく影響する睡眠。快眠できない、ダルさが残るなどの不調を感じたらすぐに見なおすべき部屋が寝室 (ベッドルーム) です。
