Old World European, Country Cottage. Three separate cottages make up this secluded village over looking a private lake in an old German, English, and French stone villa style. Hand scraped arched trusses, wide width random walnut plank flooring, distressed dark stained raised panel cabinetry, and hand carved moldings make these traditional farmhouse cottage buildings look like they have been here for 100s of years. Newly built of old materials, and old traditional building methods, including arched planked doors, leathered stone counter tops, stone entry, wrought iron straps, and metal beam straps. The Lake House is the first, a Tudor style cottage with a slate roof, 2 bedrooms, view filled living room open to the dining area, all overlooking the lake. The Carriage Home fills in when the kids come home to visit, and holds the garage for the whole idyllic village. This cottage features 2 bedrooms with on suite baths, a large open kitchen, and an warm, comfortable and inviting great room. All overlooking the lake. The third structure is the Wheel House, running a real wonderful old water wheel, and features a private suite upstairs, and a work space downstairs. All homes are slightly different in materials and color, including a few with old terra cotta roofing. Project Location: Ojai, California. Project designed by Maraya Interior Design. Inspired by European villas, the palette for this home utilizes natural earth tones, along with molded eaves, precast columns, and stone veneer. The design takes full advantage of natural valley view corridors as well as negating the line between interior and exterior living. The use of windows and French doors allows virtually every room in the residence to open up onto the spacious pool courtyard. This allows for an extension of the indoor activities to the exterior. •Architects: Aires Mateus •Location: Lisbon, Portugal •Architect: Manuel Aires Mateus •Years: 2006-20011 •Photos by: Ricardo Oliveira Alves •Stone floor: Ancient Surface A succession of everyday spaces occupied the lower floor of this restored 18th century castle on the hillside. The existing estate illustrating a period clouded by historic neglect. The restoration plan for this castle house focused on increasing its spatial value, its open space architecture and re-positioning of its windows. The garden made it possible to enhance the depth of the view over the rooftops and the Baixa river. An existing addition was rebuilt to house to conduct more private and entertainment functions. The unexpected discovery of an old and buried wellhead and cistern in the center of the house was a pleasant surprise to the architect and owners.

This Great Room debuts as one of the only known applications of stacked glass in a residence in the U.S. Instead of using steel as the structural support for the large glass wall in the Great Room, stacked glass is used, similar to a skyscraper in a downtown metroplex. Since glass has a higher tensile strength than concrete, it is certainly capable of carrying the load and withstanding the wind shears off the lake. Moreover, it frames the amazing view of the lake like no other. The automated cabinet over the fireplace opens to reveal the TV when a button on the phone is pushed.

The custom cabinets flanking this great room fireplace conceal a TV on the right and a wet bar on the left. Pocket doors open to reveal the bar while the refrigerator is hidden in the cabinet below. The stylized modern pattern on the carpet gives this otherwise traditional room a fresh updated look. Custom iron and glass coffee table. Chandeliers are custom designed from Hinkleys Lighting.

We replaced the carpet with a maple hardwood floor, placed a rug that she brought down from her house in Alaska, bought a new American Leather sleeper sofa and covered it with Ultra suede so the 5 cats don't destroy it with their claws. The two chairs are a Lexington Klismos Chair covered in Kravet Faux leather. We installed the Sliding Shoji doors so we could close off the room and it becomes a quest suite with its own bathroom. The coffee table is a reproduction of a Louis 14th gold Dolphin with glass top. I installed casters on it so it can easily be rolled aside when the sleeper sofa is made into a bed for guests.
