PICTURED The living room area with the 2 x 2 mt (6,5 x 6,5 ft) infinity pool, completed by a thin veil of water, softly falling from the ceiling. Filtration, purification, water heating and whirlpool systems complete the pool. On the back of the water blade, a technical volume, where a small guest bathroom has been created. This part of the living room can be closed by sliding and folding walls (in the photo), in order to obtain a third bedroom. / NELLA FOTO La zona del soggiorno con la vasca a sfioro di mt 2 x 2, completata da sottile velo d'acqua, in caduta morbida da soffitto. Impianti di filtrazione, purificazione, riscaldamento acqua ed idromassaggio completano la vasca. Sul retro della lama d'acqua, un volume tecnico, in cui si è ricavato un piccolo bagno ospiti. Questa parte del soggiorno è separabile dal resto a mezzo pareti scorrevoli ed ripiegabili (nella foto), al fine di ricavare una terza camera da letto. / THE PROJECT Our client wanted a town home from where he could enjoy the beautiful Ara Pacis and Tevere view, “purified” from traffic noises and lights. Interior design had to contrast the surrounding ancient landscape, in order to mark a pointbreak from surroundings. We had to completely modify the general floorplan, making space for a large, open living (150 mq, 1.600 sqf). We added a large internal infinity-pool in the middle, completed by a high, thin waterfall from he ceiling: such a demanding work awarded us with a beautifully relaxing hall, where the whisper of water offers space to imagination... The house has an open italian kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. / IL PROGETTO Il nostro cliente desiderava una casa di città, da cui godere della splendida vista di Ara Pacis e Tevere, "purificata" dai rumori e dalle luci del traffico. Il design degli interni doveva contrastare il paesaggio antico circostante, al fine di segnare un punto di rottura con l'esterno. Abbiamo dovuto modificare completamente la planimetria generale, creando spazio per un ampio soggiorno aperto (150 mq, 1.600 mq). Abbiamo aggiunto una grande piscina a sfioro interna, nel mezzo del soggiorno, completata da un'alta e sottile cascata, con un velo d'acqua che scende dolcemente dal soffitto. Un lavoro così impegnativo ci ha premiato con ambienti sorprendentemente rilassanti, dove il sussurro dell'acqua offre spazio all'immaginazione ... Una cucina italiana contemporanea, separata dal soggiorno da una vetrata mobile curva, 2 camere da letto e 3 bagni completano il progetto.

The original fireplace, and the charming and subtle form of its plaster surround, was freed from a wood-framed "box" that had enclosed it during previous remodeling. The main level’s open floor plan was thoughtfully designed to accommodate a variety of activities and serves as the primary gathering and entertainment space. The interior includes a sophisticated and modern custom kitchen featuring a large kitchen island with gorgeous blue and green Quartzite mitered edge countertops and green velvet bar stools, full overlay maple cabinets with modern slab style doors and large modern black pulls, white honed Quartz countertops with a contemporary and playful backsplash in a glossy-matte mix of grey 4”x12” tiles, a concrete farmhouse sink, high-end appliances, and stained concrete floors. Adjacent to the open-concept living space is a dramatic, white-oak, open staircase with modern, oval shaped, black, iron balusters and 7” reclaimed timber wall paneling. Large windows provide an abundance of natural light as you make your way up to the expansive loft area which overlooks the main living space and pool area. This versatile space also boasts luxurious 7” herringbone wood flooring, a hidden murphy door and a spa-like bathroom with a frameless glass shower enclosure, built-in bench and shampoo niche with a striking green ceramic wall tile and mosaic porcelain floor tile. Located beneath the staircase is a private recording studio with glass walls.

We created a dark blue panelled feature wall which creates cohesion through the room by linking it with the dark blue kitchen cabinets and it also helps to zone this space to give it its own identity, separate from the kitchen and dining spaces. This also helps to hide the TV which is less obvious against a dark backdrop than a clean white wall.

From the very first site visit the vision has been to capture the magnificent view and find ways to frame, surprise and combine it with movement through the building. This has been achieved in a Picturesque way by tantalising and choreographing the viewer’s experience. The public-facing facade is muted with simple rendered panels, large overhanging roofs and a single point of entry, taking inspiration from Katsura Palace in Kyoto, Japan. Upon entering the cavernous and womb-like space the eye is drawn to a framed view of the Indian Ocean while the stair draws one down into the main house. Below, the panoramic vista opens up, book-ended by granitic cliffs, capped with lush tropical forests. At the lower living level, the boundary between interior and veranda blur and the infinity pool seemingly flows into the ocean. Behind the stair, half a level up, the private sleeping quarters are concealed from view. Upstairs at entrance level, is a guest bedroom with en-suite bathroom, laundry, storage room and double garage. In addition, the family play-room on this level enjoys superb views in all directions towards the ocean and back into the house via an internal window. In contrast, the annex is on one level, though it retains all the charm and rigour of its bigger sibling. Internally, the colour and material scheme is minimalist with painted concrete and render forming the backdrop to the occasional, understated touches of steel, timber panelling and terrazzo. Externally, the facade starts as a rusticated rougher render base, becoming refined as it ascends the building. The composition of aluminium windows gives an overall impression of elegance, proportion and beauty. Both internally and externally, the structure is exposed and celebrated.
