Photography: Michael Hunter This project was to furnishing a newly constructed home – the living room specifically. The clients wanted an open-concept home in order to best utilize the space for everyday living, as well as entertaining. The goals of this project were to 1) maximize the space for the largest amount of seating, 2) present a transitional design style, mixing both traditional and modern elements, ensuring that the style mixes well with the other aspects of the open concept floorplan, and 3) provide a pleasant color palette. We designed the overall floorplan so that it provided maximum seating (potential for 14), while still providing a spacious ambiance. The U-shaped seating design in the room provides the ability for people to view the television from any seat and feel the warmth from the fireplace while also allowing for great conversational seating. The custom storage ottomans are on casters, so they can be pulled out to provide additional seating or a comfortable footrest for any seat. Upon entering the room, your eye can catch several different design features – the custom triptych artwork, the gold-framed mirrors, or even the split face quartz fireplace wall - each providing their own balanced focal point in the room. The main obstacle was balancing the focal point in the room between the fireplace and oversized television. The TV niche that was placed by the builder caused the seating arrangement to be somewhat offset in the space.

The classics never go out of style, as is the case with this custom new build that was interior designed from the blueprint stages with enduring longevity in mind. An eye for scale is key with these expansive spaces calling for proper proportions, intentional details, liveable luxe materials and a melding of functional design with timeless aesthetics. We creatively extended this property enormously using considered space planning. The owners' style for this country residence was to lean considerably on the luxurious textures of a ultra high-end ski chalet. The family area flows through to the Kitchen dining at the far end.

The centerpiece of the house, into which the new entry leads, and off of which all other entertaining rooms connect, is the Mad-Men-inspired living room, with hideaway bar closet, sassy pop-of-color chairs in sumptuous tangerine velvet, plenty of seating for guests, prominent displays of modern art, and a grand piano upon which to play music of course, as well as against which to lean fabulously, resting one’s elbow, with a drink in one’s other hand. The great room area is great indeed with large butt glass windows, the perfect sectional for lounging and a new twist on the fireplace with a sleek and modern design. Lounge Media unit This was a great project, transforming a small living space into a more functional room. The original alcoves either side of the fireplace were different depths and focused your eye. The client initially wanted two alcove units. My thoughts were to use linier lines to trick the eye into adding length to the room by not focusing on the width of the room. To make the room feel lighter, I proposed one side as an alcove unit and floating shelves in the other. The shelves had to line up for the aesthetics to work. I added a narrow shelving unit above two fake doors which helps the room look longer. I had made sure not to cover the window shutters, retaining as much natural light as possible. The two-tone colours, light internal and darker exterior definitely help this piece to be less intrusive. The TV is on a swing arm which we fitted and scribed the back panel around. When the TV is not in use it can be stowed away within the unit. The right-hand side of this unit is scribed around the fireplace breast leaving a seamless fit.
