A clean and masculine design with clearly defined angles reflects the architecture of the building. White cabinets on top brightens the room, while the rich dark floor is very grounding. The bamboo base cabinets gives needed texture and warm to the home. The ultimate in uniformity was achieved in the floor when the tile seamlessly meets the hardwood.

After years of renting out the house, the owners of this 1916 Craftsman were ready to make it their forever home. Both enthusiastic cooks, an updated kitchen was at the top of the list. Updating the fireplace, as well as two bathrooms in the house were also important. The homeowners passion for honoring the age of home, while also updating it, was at the forefront of our design. The end result beautifully blends the older elements with the new.

Inspired by their years in Japan and California and their Scandinavian heritage, we updated this 1938 home with a earthy palette and clean lines. Rift-cut white oak cabinetry, white quartz counters and a soft green tile backsplash are balanced with details that reference the home's history. Classic light fixtures soften the modern elements. We created a new arched opening to the living room and removed the trim around other doorways to enlarge them and mimic original arched openings. Removing an entry closet and breakfast nook opened up the overall footprint and allowed for a functional work zone that includes great counter space on either side of the range, when they had none before.

The existing kitchen was VERY traditional which did not suite the new homeowners taste and more so their functional needs. They LOVE to cook and have all the kitchen tools to create anything from Italian dishes, Asian cuisine to the finest pastries. They needed space to store all of their cooking utensils and their current kitchen just didn’t offer that. The kitchen was confined and adding additional square footage was not possible, therefore our biggest challenge was to fit all their storage and appliance needs into the existing space. The in-law suite kitchen could only be in a small corner of the basement. The kitchen design started with the question: how small can this kitchen be? The compact layout was designed to provide generous counter space, comfortable walking clearances, and abundant storage. The bold colors and fun patterns anchored by the warmth of the dark wood flooring create a happy and invigorating space. SQUARE FEET: 140

This kitchen might be small, but now it is mighty. Taking a dark closed in space and being able to open it up to create a broad, open concept kitchen that is now bright and modern, is one of the strongest transformations we have done so far this year. We started with removing walls, soffits and that dated popcorn ceiling. Taking the water heater outdoors gave us a bit more space as well. Once we had the room empty, we got to put it back together in a much more functional way. Adjusting the locations of the fridge and stove created a better working area for these homeowners. This kitchen now boasts a 30 inch range with matching stainless steel hood. Subway tile in a herringbone patter makes up the backsplash from stove to ceiling, and spreads across the whole kitchen space. Navy blue cabinets create a deep base for the bright white upper cabinets and countertops. The countertops are a Quartz material that is created to mimic a Carrara marble. A stunning addition to the space. Stainless steel fixtures throughout keep the look clean and minimalistic, such as the double spray Moen faucet. The apron front single bowl kink by Kohler in their White Haven style brings a touch of old world charm into the room. Adding to the functionality, a new sliding glass patio door took the place of the old outdated slider. Milgard provided the new energy efficient door, and kitchen window. Topping off the space is oversized crown moldings set atop risers on each of the upper cabinets. And last but certainly not least, is the 6x24, commercially rated porcelain tile that perfectly mimics a true old fashioned wood floor, with all the modern functionality. A perfect way to warm up the bright cool space.

Small Galley kitchen in Sonoma, CA. This little budget job was done with Ikea cabinets that were customized to fit the space (ie, stacked upper cabinets to create a shallow pantry). The bright red range creates a focal point while open shelves offer upper storage without invading the small space.
