This was a fun re-model with a fun-loving homeowner. Know locally as 'the 50's guy' the homeowner wanted his kitchen to reflect his passion for that decade. Using Northstar appliances from Elmira Stove Works was just the beginning. We complemented the bright red of the appliances with white cabinets and black counters. This project is the renovation of an old Craftsman style single shotgun house. We removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room to open up the space. To hide possible clutter in the Kitchen, we designed and fabricated a low wall between the two spaces, using pre-finished wood flooring as the wall finish on the Dining side of the wall and ceramic pool tiles as the backsplash. We designed and fabricated custom concrete countertops. To enhance the airiness of the spaces, we removed the existing suspended ceiling to expose the high ceilings. The goal of this renovation was to create balance without mirror symmetry. Designing with the Golden Rectangle based on the Fibonacci numbers, where the width is 62% of its height is the pleasing proportion that all objects in the universe, including the DNA module, are based. The cabinets or their combinations in this composition are either golden rectangles or squares. Their specific size and placement creates the focal point above the open shelf which is confirmed by the crossing of the diagonal lines. Based on our perception and use of the golden proportion, the sink backsplash is 7” of granite, 11” painted. Similarly, the same dimensions as a stair riser and tread. In a high ceiling making only one cabinet taller and deeper alludes to the space without being overwhelming. Form is in the cherry cabinets and granite counter tops. Function includes the dog bowl.

Before putting their Canton townhouse on the market, this customer wanted to update the countertops and have the hardwood flooring refinished in the kitchen area. We took pictures of the kitchen and paint color samples to the granite supplier and the customer chose this remnant. It compliments their custom paint color and all the wood in the kitchen. We also power washed and sealed the deck and replaced wood trim in the door area.

The issues that annoyed the family in this condo are common to new condo units: Low ceilings covered with a popcorn finish, small rooms, low light in the bedrooms and living room, and no ceiling light fixtures. Concrete ceilings are not only difficult to drill into to install fixtures, installing wiring behind them for such fixtures is impossible. There are often conduits for building services embedded in the concrete along with structural steel reinforcements, so drilling without x-raying first is dangerous. Laqfoil stretch ceiling provided a solution to all of these issues for this condo unit. A high gloss finish was chosen, as the reflections visually double the height of the space. Installing a stretch ceiling also naturally conceals the popcorn ceiling behind it, but in this case, was also used to conceal the wiring necessary to add ceiling lights in every room. The wiring was simply attached to the existing popcorn ceiling. Laqfoil stretch ceiling is supported around the perimeter only, by tracks, or profiles which are only about 0.75" thick. The ceiling membrane itself is less than one millimetre thick. We also added a small vector graphic, printed in each corner of the living room ceiling, for a unique aesthetic effect. We constructed a suspended bulkhead above the island and covered it with red high gloss membrane, to visually separate the kitchen and living room while keeping the design's open concept. This also provided a supporting structure for 3 mini chandelier pendant lights. A red rose depicted on a black and white textured ground was chosen for the kitchen ceiling and applied using digital wide format printing technology, to tie the red, black and white colour scheme with the kitchen cabinets' texture.

A spicy red hue adds energy and flair to this cozy kitchen! Simple details like the butcher block pattern laminate and plain white cabinets tie in the vibrant colour and keep it easy on the eyes.
