At only 8 ½ feet wide, this kitchen could only be executed as a galley design. The selection and placement of equipment was the key to success for this design. A fully integrated fridge and dishwasher were fitted behind cabinetry. The tall components of the kitchen were clustered at the same end as the existing pantry closet. By concentrating all of the tall items at the far end of the room, it allowed for more counter space near the entry and window. Minimal disruption to the cabinet fronts and a lack of handles combine for a look of ‘pure’ design. Truffle brown pine cabinetry contrasts with beautiful white Carrara marble counters and backsplash. A functional and elegant ‘On Wall’ system was used in combination without uppers above the sink area. The wall was intended to exhibit client’s photos.

This beautiful Icelandic kitchen offers a sleek style to this penthouse apartment. Lighting retailer Lýsing & Hönnun, provided our Cairo pendant lights to this kitchen project. The jet black tones are complemented with the industrial grey wall design. Our pendant illuminate the kitchen island area, offering a warm light preparing meals.

The original historical home had very low ceilings and limited views and access to the deck and pool. By relocating the laundry to a new mud room (see other images in this project) we were able to open the views and space to the back yard. By lowering the floor into the basement creating a small step down from the front dining room, we were able to gain more head height. Additionally, adding a coffered ceiling, we disguised the structure while offering slightly more height in between the structure members. While this job was an exercise in structural gymnastics, the results are a clean, open and functional space for today living while honoring the historic nature and proportions of the home. The project’s starting point was to understand the building’s original post and beam structure and to use that internal logic to formulate a sympathetic remodel. With an emphasis on the upper back unit, the owner’s private residence within this recently purchased Edward Killingsworth triplex, the first order of business was to strip the excess out and to return the complex to something that resembled the original. With a limited budget, the tact was to restore where possible, and to insert where needed, but always with a sympathetic eye. The kitchen quickly became the primary focus and it was soon realized that by removing the division between the existing galley and family room that the essence of the structural system could be revealed. Once opened the datum of the layered beams was adhered to with the kitchen reinforcing this overhead water line. The primary internal wall was then highlighted with a new wood veneer with the refrigerator recessed (borrowing a bit of space from the master closet) and the existing heater chromed.

Completed in 2017, this project features midcentury modern interiors with copper, geometric, and moody accents. The design was driven by the client's attraction to a grey, copper, brass, and navy palette, which is featured in three different wallpapers throughout the home. As such, the townhouse incorporates the homeowner's love of angular lines, copper, and marble finishes. The builder-specified kitchen underwent a makeover to incorporate copper lighting fixtures, reclaimed wood island, and modern hardware. In the master bedroom, the wallpaper behind the bed achieves a moody and masculine atmosphere in this elegant "boutique-hotel-like" room. The children's room is a combination of midcentury modern furniture with repetitive robot motifs that the entire family loves. Like in children's space, our goal was to make the home both fun, modern, and timeless for the family to grow into.
