When the homeowners purchased this Victorian family home, they immediately set about planning the extension that would create a more viable space for an open plan kitchen, dining and living area. Approximately two years later their dream home is now finished. The extension was designed off the original kitchen and has a large roof lantern that sits directly above the main kitchen and soft seating area beyond. French windows open out onto the garden which is perfect for the summer months. This is truly a classic contemporary space that feels so calm and collected when you walk in – the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern family living. Carefully zoning the kitchen, dining and living areas was the key to the success of this project and it works perfectly. The classic Lacanche range cooker is housed in a false chimney that is designed to suit the proportion and scale of the room perfectly. The Lacanche oven is the 100cm Cluny model with two large ovens – one static and one dual function static / convection with a classic 5 burner gas hob. Finished in stainless steel with a brass trim, this classic French oven looks completely at home in this Humphrey Munson kitchen. The main prep area is on the island positioned directly in front of the main cooking run, with a prep sink handily located to the left hand side. There is seating for three at the island with a breakfast bar at the opposite end to the prep sink which is conveniently located near to the banquette dining area. Delineated from the prep area by the natural wooden worktop finished in Portobello oak (the same accent wood used throughout the kitchen), the breakfast bar is a great spot for serving drinks to friends before dinner or for the children to have their meals at breakfast time and after school. The sink run is on the other side of the L shape in this kitchen and it has open artisan shelves above for storing everyday items like glassware and tableware. Either side of the sink is an integrated Miele dishwasher and a pull out Eurocargo bin to make clearing away dishes really easy. The use of open shelving here really helps the space to feel open and calm and there is a curved countertop cupboard in the corner providing space for storing teas, coffees and biscuits so that everything is to hand when making hot drinks. The Fisher & Paykel fridge freezer has Nickleby cabinetry surrounding it with space above for storing cookbooks but there is also another under-counter fridge in the island for additional cold food storage. The cook’s pantry provides masses of storage for dry ingredients as well as housing the freestanding microwave which is always a fantastic option when you want to keep integrated appliances to a minimum in order to maximise storage space in the main kitchen. Hardware throughout this kitchen is antique brass – this is a living finish that weathers with use over time. The glass globe pendant lighting above the island was designed by us and has antique brass hardware too. The flooring is Babington limestone tumbled which has bags of character thanks to the natural fissures within the stone and creates the perfect flooring choice for this classic contemporary kitchen. Stunning kitchen as part of a new construction project. This kitchen features two tone kitchen cabinets, a pantry wall, 10 ft island and a coffee station.

This is a great house. Perched high on a private, heavily wooded site, it has a rustic contemporary aesthetic. Vaulted ceilings, sky lights, large windows and natural materials punctuate the main spaces. The existing large format mosaic slate floor grabs your attention upon entering the home extending throughout the foyer, kitchen, and family room. Specific requirements included a larger island with workspace for each of the homeowners featuring a homemade pasta station which requires small appliances on lift-up mechanisms as well as a custom-designed pasta drying rack. Both chefs wanted their own prep sink on the island complete with a garbage “shoot” which we concealed below sliding cutting boards. A second and overwhelming requirement was storage for a large collection of dishes, serving platters, specialty utensils, cooking equipment and such. To meet those needs we took the opportunity to get creative with storage: sliding doors were designed for a coffee station adjacent to the main sink; hid the steam oven, microwave and toaster oven within a stainless steel niche hidden behind pantry doors; added a narrow base cabinet adjacent to the range for their large spice collection; concealed a small broom closet behind the refrigerator; and filled the only available wall with full-height storage complete with a small niche for charging phones and organizing mail. We added 48” high base cabinets behind the main sink to function as a bar/buffet counter as well as overflow for kitchen items. The client’s existing vintage commercial grade Wolf stove and hood commands attention with a tall backdrop of exposed brick from the fireplace in the adjacent living room. We loved the rustic appeal of the brick along with the existing wood beams, and complimented those elements with wired brushed white oak cabinets. The grayish stain ties in the floor color while the slab door style brings a modern element to the space. We lightened the color scheme with a mix of white marble and quartz countertops. The waterfall countertop adjacent to the dining table shows off the amazing veining of the marble while adding contrast to the floor. Special materials are used throughout, featured on the textured leather-wrapped pantry doors, patina zinc bar countertop, and hand-stitched leather cabinet hardware. We took advantage of the tall ceilings by adding two walnut linear pendants over the island that create a sculptural effect and coordinated them with the new dining pendant and three wall sconces on the beam over the main sink.

This highly customized kitchen was designed to be not only beautiful, but functional as well. The custom cabinetry offers plentiful storage and the built in appliances create a seamless functionality within the space. The choice of caesar stone countertops, mosaic backsplash, and wood cabinetry all work together to create a beautiful kitchen.

The existing kitchen layout created tight work aisles, minimal counter and storage space, and utilized only 62% of the overall available space, which was the impetus for the remodel. The clients’ wanted a modern farmhouse feel, but their overall focus was specific: “quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a well thought out and creative redesign for the spaces”. They also requested designated areas for baking, entertaining, and family meals, double ovens, better ventilation, island seating, a wet bar, and the addition of mudroom storage. Creating a design that not only fulfilled their wish list, but felt cohesive, and left as little “unused” space as possible, was the major challenge of this project. A large part of that challenge was not being able to change or eliminate any of the existing entryways and windows. This made the location of the island critical, as it needed to leave clearances for work aisles, seating, and walkways. The island seating is provided by a Wenge “Flying W” top that cantilevers out from its corner and is supported by recessed steel supports and waterfall ends, adding interest and dimension to the large rectangular space. Proper ventilation was achieved, along with creating a focal point, by moving the cooktop to the exterior wall and designing a custom wood hood above, that is ducted directly outside. Adding bench seating from the base cabinets to the East wall, created the connection the space needed. Opposite of the bench seats, the wet bar is also connected to the East wall, and is easily accessible from the dining room, kitchen table, and island. To create the modern farmhouse aesthetic, a mix of white and seafoam painted cabinetry were accented with stained cherry interiors, trims, and shelves, which mimicked the cherry hardwoods in the adjacent rooms and staircases. Built-in cabinetry that matched the kitchen was added to the mudroom, which included a bench seat with vented shoe storage, hooks, and a tall cabinet with an outlet for their vacuum. The addition of a pop-up mixer lift, deep storage drawers, a microwave drawer, and a lower cabinet at the end of the island, with a soapstone top, and includes a stainless-steel baking drawer organizer, makes for the ultimate “baking center”. LED lights inside and under the wall cabinets provide task lighting at the quartzite countertops, as well as mood lighting when dimmed.

Blue is the go-to color this year and it is featured on the island. White raised panel cabinets with lighted upper glass doors. Major lighting changes include recessed can lighting and pendant lights over the island. Saddle bar stools. Island seats five. Calcutta Classique Quartz countertops are on the oversized island and surrounding cabinets. Induction cooktop, Convection, and Steam oven are some of the appliance package. Hickory plank hardwood provides a beautiful floor. Two large porcelain farmhouse sinks for two working prep stations.

This expansive Victorian had tremendous historic charm but hadn’t seen a kitchen renovation since the 1950s. The homeowners wanted to take advantage of their views of the backyard and raised the roof and pushed the kitchen into the back of the house, where expansive windows could allow southern light into the kitchen all day. A warm historic gray/beige was chosen for the cabinetry, which was contrasted with character oak cabinetry on the appliance wall and bar in a modern chevron detail.
