This house west of Boston was originally designed in 1958 by the great New England modernist, Henry Hoover. He built his own modern home in Lincoln in 1937, the year before the German émigré Walter Gropius built his own world famous house only a few miles away. By the time this 1958 house was built, Hoover had matured as an architect; sensitively adapting the house to the land and incorporating the clients wish to recreate the indoor-outdoor vibe of their previous home in Hawaii. The house is beautifully nestled into its site. The slope of the roof perfectly matches the natural slope of the land. The levels of the house delicately step down the hill avoiding the granite ledge below. The entry stairs also follow the natural grade to an entry hall that is on a mid level between the upper main public rooms and bedrooms below. The living spaces feature a south- facing shed roof that brings the sun deep in to the home. Collaborating closely with the homeowner and general contractor, we freshened up the house by adding radiant heat under the new purple/green natural cleft slate floor. This project is a remodel of an existing kitchen in the heart of Ravenswood. A window was removed to add more storage and countertops. A previously awkward back hall transition was re-designed to incorporate additional space, to house the small built-in kitchen appliances and tall integrated freezer. The goal of this project was to create space for everything in the kitchen and to minimize items sitting out on the countertops. A stand out feature was designed for the Buddha statue in eating area. Channel handle cabinetry at this location added to the Zen like design and ambiance. The Espirit door style is a horizontal textural door painted in a soft white lacquer.

We wanted a clean design with maximum storage. We extended the kitchen about 3 feet, removed the bulkhead and took the cabinets up to the ceiling, Installed a professional style faucet and range hood. Next to the fridge (which we moved down for better access) we installed a floor to ceiling pullout pantry cabinet. Also installed under cabinet LED lights and replaced the old fluorescent lights with recessed cans and a chrome industrial style pendant above the black granite composite sink. We left the original side door as well as the greenhouse window. Black cabinets,white quartz counters, grey mini stacked limestone back splash, light grey walls, chrome accents and stainless steel appliances. The floor has yet to be done as the whole how will be getting those all at the same time.

The renovation involved adding a sleeping loft above the existing structure (which actually floats on huge logs). Because it's not an "official bedroom," this staircase by The Iron Shop is allowable. I "waterfalled" the countertops to wrap cabinet sides for a more interesting look. The existing rounded door to storage/laundry was refinished/refitted. Heated blue stone tile floors keep this kitchen cozy. Beams across the ceiling support the upper structure as does wood post in foreground. There are two sinks in this tiny galley kitchen. Kohler's "trough sink" sits below window in this view, creating a highly functional prep area adjacent to range top.
