Kitchen is Center In our design to combine the apartments, we centered the kitchen - making it a dividing line between private and public space; vastly expanding the storage and work surface area. We discovered an existing unused roof penetration to run a duct to vent out a powerful kitchen hood. The original bathroom skylight now illuminates the central kitchen space. Without changing the standard skylight size, we gave it architectural scale by carving out the ceiling to maximize daylight. Light now dances off the vaulted, sculptural angles of the ceiling to bathe the entire space in natural light.

There were two goals in mind while designing for this gut renovation - contrast and customization. First, while designing the new kitchen, we used dark materials and finishes to create an opposing volume within the larger bright white context of the loft. Sometimes a project starts with a statement piece. The inspiration and centrepiece for this apartment was a pendant light sourced from France. The Vertigo Light is reminiscent of a ladies’ racing day hat, so the drama and glamour of a day at the races was the inspiration for all other design decisions. I used colour to create drama, with rich, deep hues offset with more neutral greys to add layers of interest and occasional moments of wow. The floor – another bespoke element – combines functionality with visual appeal to meet the brief of having a sense of walking on clouds, while functionally disguising pet hair. Storage was an essential part in this renovation and clever solutions were identified for each room. Apartment living always brings some storage constraints, so achieving space saving solutions with efficient design is key to success. Rotating the kitchen achieved the open floor plan requested, and brought light and views into every room, opening the main living area to create a wonderful sense of space. A juxtaposition of lineal design and organic shapes has resulted in a dramatic inner city apartment with a sense of warmth and homeliness that resonated with the clients.

The serving bar is away from the cooking area so people using it won't get in the way of other people (who may be cooking). It combines wine storage and a coffee/expresso maker. Where the kitchen cabinets are white, these are dark as an accent to the kitchen... John Barton

Uno spazio ridotto non dev'essere un limite. In questo appartamento rispondiamo alla passione per la cucina della proprietaria organizzando un relooking completo in soli 6 mq. Il progetto sfrutta al massimo l'altezza con pensili e colonne attrezzate, e il piano di lavoro personalizzanto da tagli diagonali e una morbida curva in chiusura nella zona fuochi. L'allestimento sottolinea i contrasti dei colori chiari/scuri e nei materiali lucidi/opachi con la scelta di accessori ad hoc, materiali moderni e note di verde acido che marcano un ambiente studiato e di design. 2014 (Appartamento, Roma) A reduced space must not be a limit . In this apartment we respond to the passion for cooking owner of organizing a complete makeover in only 6 square meters . The project takes full advantage of the height with wall units and tall units , and the work plan personalizzanto by diagonal cuts and a soft closing curve in the cooking area . The exhibition highlights the light / dark color contrasts and glossy / opaque materials with the choice of ad hoc accessories, modern materials and acid green notes which mark an environment designed and design . 2014 ( Apartment , Rome )

photos by Pedro Marti The main goal of this renovation was to improve the overall flow of this one bedroom. The existing layout consisted of too much unusable circulation space and poorly laid out storage located at the entry of the apartment. The existing kitchen was an antiquated, small enclosed space. The main design solution was to remove the long entry hall by opening the kitchen to create one large open space that interacted with the main living room. A new focal point was created in the space by adding a long linear element of floating shelves with a workspace below opposite the kitchen running from the entry to the living space. Visually the apartment is tied together by using the same material for various elements throughout. Grey oak is used for the custom kitchen cabinetry, the floating shelves and desk, and to clad the entry walls. Custom light grey acid etched glass is used for the upper kitchen cabinets, the drawer fronts below the desk, and the tall closet doors at the entry. In the kitchen black granite countertops wrap around terminating with a raised dining surface open to the living room. The black counters are mirrored with a soft black acid etched backsplash that helps the kitchen feel larger as they create the illusion of receding. The existing floors of the apartment were stained a dark ebony and complimented by the new dark metallic porcelain tiled kitchen floor. In the bathroom the tub was replaced with an open shower. Brown limestone floors flow straight from the bathroom into the shower with out a curb, European style. The walls are tiled with a large format light blue glass.

Tray dividers were incorporated over the refrigerator where heat and humidity can not damage bakeware or vases.
