This home's plentiful views of San Diego Bay provided much inspiration for the colors, tones and textures in this kitchen. Design details include porcelain tile backsplash, soapstone countertops, floating wood shelves and a custom butcher block top for the island.

The existing, builder-grade, kitchen was not functional, as it was poorly lit, much needed storage space was underutilized, and un-safe, as the microwave was hung over the sink, causing the homeowners to hit their heads while working at the sink. Being a unit in an historic building, I was unable to move any of the existing plumbing & electrical, but could add to, as we did with the recessed and under cabinet LED lighting, I moved the microwave to a safe location, off of the counter and next to the refrigerator, and took the cabinetry to the ceiling, gaining an additional 12" of vertical storage along the main wall of the kitchen. Due to a supply vent being on the wall above the refrigerator, we had to get creative in how we brought it through the crown molding build-up, which led to a custom vent cover, that was designed and then fabricated to fit perfectly. This kitchen is packed with details that all came together to create a stunning, yet functional, new kitchen.

The existing kitchen was VERY traditional which did not suite the new homeowners taste and more so their functional needs. They LOVE to cook and have all the kitchen tools to create anything from Italian dishes, Asian cuisine to the finest pastries. They needed space to store all of their cooking utensils and their current kitchen just didn’t offer that. The kitchen was confined and adding additional square footage was not possible, therefore our biggest challenge was to fit all their storage and appliance needs into the existing space. We worked with the owners of this World War II-era farmhouse in Wynnewood, PA, to renovate and modernize their kitchen. We added custom cabinetry, open shelving made from reclaimed wood, state-of-the-art commercial appliances, a beverage center, and a large island with seating to enhance the functionality of the space. High-end finishes, like the white granite and reclaimed long leaf pine wood counters and the white porcelain tile backsplash, give this farmhouse kitchen a modern, yet classic, look. Unique design details found throughout this kitchen bridge the gaps between classic, modern, industrial, and eclectic. Rare and intricate combinations of tile, wood, steel, aluminum, and Dekton create a comfortable large kitchen with harmonious balance. Classic white cabinets with stainless steel toe kick are contrasted by the large walnut island with a taller coordinating toe. Floating in complete disguise is the 1.2 cm ultra thin countertop by Dekton rarely seen in a classic kitchen application. Walnut shelves float on the white stamped tin patterned tile and are grounded with the industrial stainless tambour appliance garage. The 3" thick floating bistro bar top by Dekton cantelivers nearly three feet with minimal visual support giving ample knee space to those who lounge at the table. The two island kitchen with an eating bar and breakfast table solved every design dilemma a large long kitchen space can have.
