Our goal was to modernize an outdated spec kitchen by increasing the overall storage capacity and re-configuring the work-space to accommodate more use while increasing the natural light into the kitchen. We collaborated with the Owners Architect and determined it was necessary to partially remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room. Two small windows along the rear wall were replaced with a new over-sized window bringing in massive amounts of natural light. We removed a breakfast table that previously crowded the kitchen circulation and replaced it with a breakfast counter facing the kitchen and new window. The semi-open kitchen, delineated by the breakfast counter created a visual buffer for a busy kitchen and maximized the views and natural from the new window. Our clients are seasoned home renovators. Their Malibu oceanside property was the second project JRP had undertaken for them. After years of renting and the age of the home, it was becoming prevalent the waterfront beach house, needed a facelift. Our clients expressed their desire for a clean and contemporary aesthetic with the need for more functionality. After a thorough design process, a new spatial plan was essential to meet the couple’s request. This included developing a larger master suite, a grander kitchen with seating at an island, natural light, and a warm, comfortable feel to blend with the coastal setting. Demolition revealed an unfortunate surprise on the second level of the home: Settlement and subpar construction had allowed the hillside to slide and cover structural framing members causing dangerous living conditions. Our design team was now faced with the challenge of creating a fix for the sagging hillside. After thorough evaluation of site conditions and careful planning, a new 10’ high retaining wall was contrived to be strategically placed into the hillside to prevent any future movements. With the wall design and build completed — additional square footage allowed for a new laundry room, a walk-in closet at the master suite. Once small and tucked away, the kitchen now boasts a golden warmth of natural maple cabinetry complimented by a striking center island complete with white quartz countertops and stunning waterfall edge details. The open floor plan encourages entertaining with an organic flow between the kitchen, dining, and living rooms. New skylights flood the space with natural light, creating a tranquil seaside ambiance. New custom maple flooring and ceiling paneling finish out the first floor. Downstairs, the ocean facing Master Suite is luminous with breathtaking views and an enviable bathroom oasis. The master bath is modern and serene, woodgrain tile flooring and stunning onyx mosaic tile channel the golden sandy Malibu beaches. The minimalist bathroom includes a generous walk-in closet, his & her sinks, a spacious steam shower, and a luxurious soaking tub. Defined by an airy and spacious floor plan, clean lines, natural light, and endless ocean views, this home is the perfect rendition of a contemporary coastal sanctuary. This was a kitchen remodel which included edits to the adjoining dining room, addition of a butler’s pantry and bar. The space was taken down to the studs, new flooring was installed, new windows were added over the kitchen sink, new lighting, kitchen/pantry/bar cabinetry, countertops and custom tiled backsplash. A large Franke fireclay sink sits centered at the window and is flanked by two paneled Asko dishwashers. Groehe fixtures include a pot filler at the 48" dual fuel Wolf range. Island cabinetry with seating for six and loads of drawer storage is in Cadet Gray, a subtle contrast to the Anitque White finish of the perimeter cabinets. Counter top is Zodiaq London Sky with 3x12 ceramic gray tile back splash. Island and spice pull outs feature large furniture legs which complement the hand carved corbels at the wood hood. Blue cabinets and a gray glass backsplash in a chevron pattern set the tone in this contemporary kitchen and great room. Wood beams warm the space and accentuate the height of the kitchen and dining area. The appliances are by Thermador and the faucets, hardware and lighting fixtures are matte brass. The dining area has a large wood table and linen chairs with brass legs.

A kitchen that is set up like this at this level has to go all the way! Every area just has to work and work just right, the appliances had to be high end, the cabinets had to be all custom crafted, double crown moldings molded to the ceiling, the LED lights were all factory cut into the sides and the bottom of the cabinets then covered with light strips for a flush inset look, to match these high-end sophisticated cabinets and new door styles. The island is a monster! it had to perform quadruple duty, prepping, storage and seating. Every inch of that Island was utilized for something, this goes to the heart of our philosophy, which is; no dead/useless space shall be design into any kitchen! The custom color on this island just happen to compliment other areas of this house that made it even more stunning! By the time the dust settled, all we can say was STUNNING! Just stunning.
