Sliding barn wood doors cover the pantry and can be moved easily to change the look of the kitchen. This kitchen renovation was made more economical by refacing the existing cabinets and building custom face frames, and drawer fronts with barn wood.

Bookshelves in the kitchen and breakfast room make for easy lingering over a snack and a book. The "Dream of the '90s" was alive in this industrial loft condo before Neil Kelly Portland Design Consultant Erika Altenhofen got her hands on it. The 1910 brick and timber building was converted to condominiums in 1996. No new roof penetrations could be made, so we were tasked with creating a new kitchen in the existing footprint. Erika's design and material selections embrace and enhance the historic architecture, bringing in a warmth that is rare in industrial spaces like these. Among her favorite elements are the beautiful black soapstone counter tops, the RH medieval chandelier, concrete apron-front sink, and Pratt & Larson tile backsplash

This new house in Westmere was designed by Rogan Nash Architects. Much like a family, the design focuses on interconnection. The kitchen acts as the lynchpin of the design – not only as a metaphoric heart, but as the centre of the plan: a reflection of a family who have a passion for cooking and entertaining. The rooms directly converse with each other: from the kitchen you can see the deck and snug where the children play; or talk to friends at the sofa in the lounge; whilst preparing food together to put on the dining table.

Cabinetmaker: Walter Lane, LLC design: Tim Hess and Jeff Dearing for DSA Architects Interior Design Collaborator: Tricia Upton Interiors Photographer: Greg Premru Photo Stylist: Stephanie Rossi This project started small, with the clients’ desire to remodel the existing kitchen. When our analysis of the existing conditions revealed the extent to which the house’s many previous additions had failed to enrich each other or unify the whole, the scope of work bloomed to include extensive renovations throughout the first floor. We’ve sought to bring a cohesion and clarity to this already commodious house quite beautifully sited. Much of the design attention in this project was focused on meetings and overlaps. The autonomy and dignity of individual spaces was restored with the creation and use of interstitial spaces; the spaces between. The doorway between kitchen and dining becomes a display pantry and wet bar, the entry foyer is framed with a narrower opening, and the way to the Living Room is re-shaped with a paneled deep jamb. The story is recounted in the January / February 2013 edition of New England Home.

Suite à l'acquisition du rez-de-chaussée de leur duplex, les propriétaires ont décidé de rénover l'ensemble de l'appartement. La salle de bain a été entièrement rénovée, incluant la plomberie, l'isolation du mur extérieur et l'électricité. L'entrepreneur général a collaborer de concert avec le propriétaire dans la sélection des équipements de finition (tuile de céramique murale et de plancher, robinetterie, douche, vanité). Dans la cuisine, la rénovation complète comprenait le remplacement de toute la plomberie, l'électricité et le plancher de céramique. Les armoires et les plans de travail ont été fournis par le client (de IKEA). Dans tout le rez-de-chaussée, parquet et moquette ont été retirés pour mettre en valeur les parquets existants, poncés et vernis. Les murs et plafonds en plâtre ont également été repeints. __________ Following the acquisition of the ground floor of their duplex, the homeowners decided to renovate the entire apartment. The bathroom was completely renovated, including plumbing, insulation of the exterior wall, and electricity. Ceramic walls and floor tiling, plumbing hardware, and finishes for the shower and vanity were selected through collaboration between the general contractor and homeowner. In the kitchen, the full renovation included the replacement of all plumbing, electricity, and ceramic flooring. Cabinets and countertops were supplied by the customer (from IKEA). Throughout the ground floor, parquet and carpet were removed to showcase existing hardwood floors, which were sanded and varnished. Plaster walls and ceilings were also given a fresh repaint.
