This expansive Victorian had tremendous historic charm but hadn’t seen a kitchen renovation since the 1950s. The homeowners wanted to take advantage of their views of the backyard and raised the roof and pushed the kitchen into the back of the house, where expansive windows could allow southern light into the kitchen all day. A warm historic gray/beige was chosen for the cabinetry, which was contrasted with character oak cabinetry on the appliance wall and bar in a modern chevron detail. This Spice Rack/Storage System is accessed by an out and downward motion, making the unreachable, reachable. This 4" filler cabinet comes down to counter top level making even the top area, convenient and easily accessible. The contents in this photo shows one of optional 32 pod K-Cup Rack (2racks possible per unit) that takes the place of 3 shelves. The remaining 3 shelves hold standard spice bottles. This Spice Rack/Storage System is a right-facing unit. Left facing units are also available.

The goal for this project was to reconfigure the spaces to accommodate the lifestyle of the client while maintaining the classic seven layout of this pre-war Upper West Side apartment. The large book collection was the driving force in the renovation. Excess doors in a long corridor were converted to bookshelves flanking the clients study. The renovation included a large master bedroom (combining two bedrooms), new fixtures and finishes in all three bathrooms and a more functional kitchen. All plaster moldings and column capitals were stripped and restored. Stain glass windows were placed back in as the original intent. The dining area paneling was stripped entirely to expose the rich oak wood and plaster detailing. The foyer received new marble flooring and fine detailing revealed rich motifs. New wood oak flooring was installed throughout and new bordered stone tiling was placed in the bathrooms. The kitchen was reconfigured which allowed for a fully functioning space using wolf and subzero appliances and open eating area with a 3’ by 7’ marble slab island. The new layout provides the formal yet casual feeling the client desired while maintaining an elegance worthy of its grand south views of the neo-romanesque building of the Natural History Museum.

The builder we partnered with for this beauty original wanted to use his cabinet person (who builds and finishes on site) but the clients advocated for manufactured cabinets - and we agree with them! These homeowners were just wonderful to work with and wanted materials that were a little more "out of the box" than the standard "white kitchen" you see popping up everywhere today - and their dog, who came along to every meeting, agreed to something with longevity, and a good warranty! The cabinets are from WW Woods, their Eclipse (Frameless, Full Access) line in the Aspen door style - a shaker with a little detail. The perimeter kitchen and scullery cabinets are a Poplar wood with their Seagull stain finish, and the kitchen island is a Maple wood with their Soft White paint finish. The space itself was a little small, and they loved the cabinetry material, so we even paneled their built in refrigeration units to make the kitchen feel a little bigger. And the open shelving in the scullery acts as the perfect go-to pantry, without having to go through a ton of doors - it's just behind the hood wall!

Kitchen in a 1926 bungalow, done to my client's brief that it should look 'original' to the house. The three 'jewels' of the kitchen are the immaculately restored 1928 Wedgwood high-oven stove, the SubZero refrigerator/freezer designed to look like an old-fashioned ice box, and the island referencing a farmhouse table with pie-save cabinet underneath, done in ebonized oak and painted bead-board. The red Marmoleum floor has double inlaid borders, the counters are honed black granite, and the walls, cabinets, and trim are all painted a soft ocher-based cream-colour taken from a 1926 DutchBoy paint deck. Virtually everything is custom, save the sink, faucets, and pulls, done to my original designs. The Bosch dishwasher, washer, and dryer are all hidden in the cabinetry. This cozy lake cottage skillfully incorporates a number of features that would normally be restricted to a larger home design. A glance of the exterior reveals a simple story and a half gable running the length of the home, enveloping the majority of the interior spaces. To the rear, a pair of gables with copper roofing flanks a covered dining area and screened porch. Inside, a linear foyer reveals a generous staircase with cascading landing. Further back, a centrally placed kitchen is connected to all of the other main level entertaining spaces through expansive cased openings. A private study serves as the perfect buffer between the homes master suite and living room. Despite its small footprint, the master suite manages to incorporate several closets, built-ins, and adjacent master bath complete with a soaker tub flanked by separate enclosures for a shower and water closet. Upstairs, a generous double vanity bathroom is shared by a bunkroom, exercise space, and private bedroom. The bunkroom is configured to provide sleeping accommodations for up to 4 people. The rear-facing exercise has great views of the lake through a set of windows that overlook the copper roof of the screened porch below.

It's great to have the look of a traditional cabinet but what makes a cabinet more useful is pull out drawers. This provide easier access and more functionality. We are using pull-outs almost exclusively in our cabinetry because of the easy of use.
