This client came to us with a very clear vision of what she wanted, but she needed help to refine and execute the design. At our first meeting she described her style as somewhere between modern rustic and ‘granny chic’ – she likes cozy spaces with nods to the past, but also wanted to blend that with the more contemporary tastes of her husband and children. Functionally, the old layout was less than ideal with an oddly placed 3-sided fireplace and angled island creating traffic jams in and around the kitchen. By creating a U-shaped layout, we clearly defined the chef’s domain and created a circulation path that limits disruptions in the heart of the kitchen. While still an open concept, the black cabinets, bar height counter and change in flooring all add definition to the space. The vintage inspired black and white tile is a nod to the past while the black stainless range and matte black faucet are unmistakably modern. High on our client’s wish list was eliminating upper cabinets and keeping the countertops clear. In order to achieve this, we needed to ensure there was ample room in the base cabinets and reconfigured pantry for items typically stored above. The full height tile backsplash evokes exposed brick and serves as the backdrop for the custom wood-clad hood and decorative brass sconces – a perfect blend of rustic, modern and chic. Black and brass elements are repeated throughout the main floor in new hardware, lighting, and open shelves as well as the owners’ curated collection of family heirlooms and furnishings. In addition to renovating the kitchen, we updated the entire first floor with refinished hardwoods, new paint, wainscoting, wallcovering and beautiful new stained wood doors. Our client had been dreaming and planning this kitchen for 17 years and we’re thrilled we were able to bring it to life.

The wife, who is a chef and meticulously organized, had this to say about 3 Lights Design's attention to detail, "I'm so impressed how you heard all the little silly things I was saying and got it into a picture!!!" This kitchen renovation consisted of a kitchen reface, where we updated the cabinets with an MDF Michigan door style in colour SW6251 - Outerspace featuring black handles. We installed a Quartzite Negresco Honed countertop with a granite sink in pearl black and a chrome faucet and drinking faucet. A white Teramoda tile was installed for the kitchen backsplash. Two pendant lights were installed over the peninsula and we replaced the ceiling light in the dinette area. Vinyl plank flooring was installed throughout the kitchen, dinette area, laundry room and hallway/closet leading to garage and baseboards were installed. The entire kitchen, laundry room and hallway area were painted. We also updated the ceiling fixture over the kitchen with pot lights.

The U shape of this kitchen provides plenty of space or moving around the kitchen. Great for a busy cook or when entertaining. It also gives plenty of worksurface space and enables to make use the space as a breakfast bar area.

As soon as we walked into this beautiful Spanish Revival home, we knew our design had to be second to none. To bring a bit of modernism into a space so authentic without losing any charm and originality was going to be a challenge well worth taking. This home, “Cielito Lindo”, which means “Beautiful Little Heaven”, was designed by the famous architect Henry Jekel in 1928. We had the pleasure of renovating it, and we think Henry would be proud. Starting in the Kitchen we relocated the sink into the peninsula and opened it up for seating near the dining area for a broad continuous space. A 48” Wolf commercial range is surrounded by white shaker cabinets and white statuario, marble look, quartz countertops. The backsplash is made up of white 2x12 tiles set in both brick and herringbone patterns. Irregular edges give it that old world look, then matched with gray grout to duplicate look of cement. LED under cabinet lighting set on a dimmer switch sets whatever mood you are in. Oil rubbed bronze plumbing fixtures and hardware, all atop natural hardwood floors finish off this Peninsula Kitchen donning that Spanish Revival feel, with a fresh twist. Next we added a wet bar and passthrough using accenting light blue tiles matching the white tiles used throughout kitchen. Cool colors and old world touches, such as the custom leaded glass upper cabinet doors stylize the area. Of course, we added a bit of modernism with an oversized wine fridge, all directly off the game room. Like we said, Henry would be proud.

This 2 tone kitchen has Mocha Knotty Alder on the lowers and Painted White upper all in Inset cabinetry from Dura Supreme. The built-in Boos butcher block serves as a great prep area. The Tile behind the cook top is by Encore Ceramics. The coffee bar features a Miele Coffee maker. The built-in banquette and custom cushions allows for a comfortable seating area for a large family.

The pantry was custom built to fit the clients' needs with pull-out shelves to make accessing everything in the back easier. A socket was installed to create a coffee and smoothie station that can be hidden when not in use behind the pantry doors keeping the countertops cleared.

The horizontal grain of the walnut elongates the interior face of the cabinetry. Minimizing the number of wall cabinets allows for an open, airy feel. Photo © Heidi Solander.
