Our clients for this Silicon Valley remodel wanted us to enlarge their existing kitchen by expanding into their adjacent dinette and family room area and address heat and glare issues caused by the afternoon sun at the rear of the residence. Our remodel eventually addressed almost all of the ground floor rooms. In addition we coordinated the addition of new windows throughout the house and “refreshed” the front entry and rear façade. We expanded the kitchen into the dinette area by creating an informal bar area to replace their existing dinette area. We increased indoor-outdoor flow by creating a wall of French doors and windows at the rear which included solar shading integrated into the rear wall by means of a system of interior wall panels defined by carefully laid out reveals. We created a dropped ceiling between the kitchen and the family room to define the bar counter area. A new, minimalist fireplace design replaced the existing brick fireplace. Wenge-colored cabinets and soft putty-colored walls in the dining/family room create a serene overall unity to the space. At the front entry, new doors, hardware and lighting brought this Mid-century rancher into the 21st Century. Photos by Mark Brand.

Glass block was removed from the end of the peninsula and the countertop widened to create an overhang for a breakfast bar. The peach coloured backsplash tile was removed and replaced with a glass mosaic sheet tile applied right up to the ceiling on the peninsula end. Rather than replacing the cabinets, the solidly built plywood cabinets were treated to a coat of paint. The red for the upper cabinets was chosen because it was a favorite of both clients.

Although keen for the cabinetry to have a timeless feel; our clients were keen to inject their personality into the kitchen. We decided the best way to meet their needs was to introduce a pop of colour. The green splash-back and up-stands was a master stroke; this stunning glass feature oozes personality and further adds to the feeling of space due to the reflective nature of the glass.

Die Kunden haben uns gebeten ihre neue Küche zu planen. Wichtig waren Ihnen helle frische Farben, eine Granitarbeitsplatte, ein Platz für den Laptop und der vorhanden Kühlschrank sollte wiederzuverwendet und in die Küche zu integrieren werden. Vor allem aber sollte ein Stauraum geschaffen werden der funktional ist, mit einer Klappe hinter der alles verschwinden kann - wie von Zauberhand....

The two floating shelves are made from baltic birch plywood. The lower shelf features venting to accommodate our client's coffee station.
