Designing a new staircase to connect all three levels freed up space for this kitchen. Before, my client had to squeeze through a narrow opening in the corner of the kitchen to access an equally narrow stair to the basement. In the process of evaluating the space we discovered there was no foundation under the kitchen walls! Noticing that the entry to their home was little used--everyone came right in to the kitchen--gave me the idea that we could connect the kitchen to the entry and convert it into a pantry! The structural Douglas Fir post and ceiling beams set the tone along with the stain matched 2x6 pine tongue and groove ceiling –this also serves as the finished floor surface at the loft above. Dreaming a cozy feel at the kitchen/dining area a darker stain was used to visual provide a shorter ceiling height to a 9’ plate line. The knotty Alder floating shelves and wall cabinetry share their own natural finish with a chocolate glazing. The island cabinet was of painted maple with a chocolate glaze as well, this unit wanted to look like a piece of furniture that was brought into the ‘cabin’ rather than built-in, again with a value minded approach. The flooring is a pre-finished engineered ½” Oak flooring, and again with the darker shade we wanted to emotionally deliver the cozier feel for the space. Additionally, lighting is essential to a cook’s –and kitchen’s- performance. We needed there to be ample lighting but only wanted to draw attention to the pendants above the island and the dining chandelier. We opted to wash the back splash and the counter tops with hidden LED strips. We then elected to use track lighting over the cooking area with as small of heads as possible and in black to make them ‘go away’ or get lost in the sauce.

Take a seat at this massive granite island while you wait for dinner. This stunning kitchen also showcases two-tone cabinets, a beverage center, and stainless steel appliances.

Note the large scale tile juxtaposed against the quilt style tile on the oven wall. This large and simple toned grey field allows the other area to stand out, yet this window wall detail also serves a purpose of showing how every area can be unique, but not glaring in contrast.

Because we kept the original granite, I had to come up with a cabinet color that would work with the granite & new waterproof, luxury vinyl plank flooring. I came up with the perfect base and glaze colors - the pictures don't do it justice!

Casual elegance is what you get when you walk into this French Country style kitchen. The custom cabinets are adorned with oil bronze hardware that give it a vintage feel. The Thermador and wolf appliances would make an chef happy to cook and serve their family. A mix of honed granite and quartzite add some character along with the seeded glass pendants that hang above the oversized island.

The stain and finish of the mahogany cabinets were carefully selected in tandem with the restoration of original mahogany panel walls in the entry and living room spaces (see peek of both spaces beyond) With the rich red-brown tones of the mahogany and fireplace brick, the island brings a light, bright balance to the kitchen at its center. The coolness of light blue-gray tile helps compliment the dominant warm tones. AND we just love those mitred corners on that tiled hood.
