Dutton Architects did an extensive renovation of a post and beam mid-century modern house in the canyons of Beverly Hills. The house was brought down to the studs, with new interior and exterior finishes, windows and doors, lighting, etc. A secure exterior door allows the visitor to enter into a garden before arriving at a glass wall and door that leads inside, allowing the house to feel as if the front garden is part of the interior space. A beautiful in-frame kitchen manufactured by our British supplier Stoneham in there 'Penshurst' range. A solid wood Oak painted door with inner cock beading, really sets this kitchen apart and painted in Farrow & Ball colours. The island is over 4m in length and offers the perfect breakfast bar fro 4 people to enjoy tea and coffee int he mornings. But the real 'wow' factor comes from the tall bank of units, that contain a hidden drink station and bar area behind mirrored pocket doors. With the rich walnut veneer interiors contrasting beautifully with the external door colour. Either side of them are two secret hidden doors, one leading to the utility room and the other leading to the children's playroom. No detail was left un-turned.

This recent remodel was a full gut down to the stubs and sub floors. The biggest challenge in the space was creating a single room from 2 separate areas. The original galley kitchen and a 1980’s add-on breakfast room. The breakfast room was cold and had old mechanicals emphasizing the need for a continuous space. The existing kitchen area was small, cramped and did not fit the lifestyle of the homeowners. The homeowners wanted a hidden pantry for large and seasonal items as well as for food storage. I planned for a portion of the garage to be transformed to a full size, walk-in, hidden pantry that catered to the needs of the family. Three of the most important design features include the hidden pantry, “other room” storage such as the mudroom seat and window bench, as well as the eat-in counter. Other notable design elements include glass cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, a message center and built-in under the counter appliances. This was an exciting kitchen remodel for a hundred-year-old home designed by Addison Mizner. The challenge was to create a more functional space while both updating and honoring the heritage of this Mediterranean home. While keeping the exterior intact, this 815 square foot freestanding, Edwardian home was gutted and re-framed by Michael Merrill Design Studio to accommodate a clean, crisp, ultramodern design. Small and compact, the new layout widened the existing gallery while also making the residence's only closet more efficient and accessible. Barn doors help to accentuate the height of the residence's ceiling. The bathroom's entry was moved from the kitchen to the gallery. The details help to make the bathroom, which is just over 50 square feet, feel quite spacious. Shawnee homeowners contacted Arlene Ladegaard of Design Connection, Inc. to update their family room which featured all golden oak cabinetry and trim. The furnishings represented the mid-century with well-worn furniture and outdated colors. The homeowners treasured a few wood pieces that they had artfully chosen for their interest. They wanted to keep these and incorporate them into the new look. These pieces anchored the selection of the new furniture and the design of the remodeled family room. Because the family room was part of a first floor remodel and the space flowed from one room to the next, the colors in each room needed to blend together. The paint colors tied the rooms together seamlessly. The wood trim was sprayed white and the walls painted a warm soothing gray. The fireplace was painted a darker gray. A floor plan was created for all the furnishings to meet the homeowners’ preference for comfortable chairs that would focus on the fireplace and television. The design team placed the TV above the mantel for easy viewing from all angles of the room. The team also chose upholstered pieces for their comfort and well-wearing fabrics while ensuring that the older traditional pieces mingled well with the contemporary lamps and new end tables. An area rug anchored the room and gold and warm gray tones add richness and warmth to the new color scheme. Hunter Douglas wood blinds finished in white to blend with the trim color completed the remodel of this beautiful and updated transitional room. Design Connection Inc. of Overland Park provided space planning, remodeling, painting, furniture, area rugs, accessories, project management and paint and stain colors.
