This scullery kitchen is located near the garage entrance to the home and the utility room. It is one of two kitchens in the home. The more formal entertaining kitchen is open to the formal living area. This kitchen provides an area for the bulk of the cooking and dish washing. It can also serve as a staging area for caterers when needed. The original historical home had very low ceilings and limited views and access to the deck and pool. By relocating the laundry to a new mud room (see other images in this project) we were able to open the views and space to the back yard. By lowering the floor into the basement creating a small step down from the front dining room, we were able to gain more head height. Additionally, adding a coffered ceiling, we disguised the structure while offering slightly more height in between the structure members. While this job was an exercise in structural gymnastics, the results are a clean, open and functional space for today living while honoring the historic nature and proportions of the home. This part curved, part straight central island took its shape from functional need - straight alongside the back wall, and curved where it creates a conversational circle. The mid century adage "form follows function" is still a great piece of advice. I took it a step further and created the same outline for the soffit, and for some adjacent steps. And rather than being a dry old idea, functional forms can also be beautiful and dramatic!

The bold colour choice injects a sense of vibrancy and freshness into the space, instantly elevating the atmosphere. The rich, warm tones of the brushed golden handles provide a luxurious touch, enhancing the overall look of the kitchen.

Kitchen remodeling project where the homeowners decided to update their kitchen to a more transitional look by installing new custom cabinets. They went with a mission door by Bridgewood Advantage Series done in Maple. For the base cabinets they went with a stone color while the upper cabinets and pantry were done in boulder. For the countertops they went with a Quartz 3 cm and the backsplash was done in a glass subway tile. Some additional touches we included were a bookcase on the end of the island for cookbooks and a custom hutch/coffee station. To complete the new look we also installed oversized Harlow Glass knobs on the upper cabinets and Bordeaux Cabinet pulls on lower cabinets.
