We expanded this 1974 home from 1,200 square feet to 1,600 square feet with a new front addition and large kitchen remodel! This home was in near-original condition, with dark wood doors & trim, carpet, small windows, a cramped entry, and a tiny kitchen and dining space. The homeowners came to our design-build team seeking to increase their kitchen and living space and update the home's style with durable new finishes. "We're hard on our home!", our clients reminded us during the design phase of the project. The highlight of this project is the entirely remodeled kitchen, which rests in the combined footprint of the original small kitchen and the dining room. The crisp blue and white cabinetry is balanced against the warmth of the wide plank hardwood flooring, custom-milled wood trim, and new wood ceiling beam. This family now has space to gather around the large island, designed to have a useful function on each side. The entertaining sides of the island host bar seating and a wine refrigerator and built-in bottle storage. The cooking and prep sides of the island include a bookshelf for cookbooks --perfectly within reach of the gas cooktop and double ovens-- and a microwave drawer across from the refrigerator; only a step away to reheat meals.

This project for a builder husband and interior-designer wife involved adding onto and restoring the luster of a c. 1883 Carpenter Gothic cottage in Barrington that they had occupied for years while raising their two sons. They were ready to ditch their small tacked-on kitchen that was mostly isolated from the rest of the house, views/daylight, as well as the yard, and replace it with something more generous, brighter, and more open that would improve flow inside and out. They were also eager for a better mudroom, new first-floor 3/4 bath, new basement stair, and a new second-floor master suite above. The design challenge was to conceive of an addition and renovations that would be in balanced conversation with the original house without dwarfing or competing with it. The new cross-gable addition echoes the original house form, at a somewhat smaller scale and with a simplified more contemporary exterior treatment that is sympathetic to the old house but clearly differentiated from it. Renovations included the removal of replacement vinyl windows by others and the installation of new Pella black clad windows in the original house, a new dormer in one of the son’s bedrooms, and in the addition. At the first-floor interior intersection between the existing house and the addition, two new large openings enhance flow and access to daylight/view and are outfitted with pairs of salvaged oversized clear-finished wooden barn-slider doors that lend character and visual warmth. A new exterior deck off the kitchen addition leads to a new enlarged backyard patio that is also accessible from the new full basement directly below the addition. For this ski-in, ski-out mountainside property, the intent was to create an architectural masterpiece that was simple, sophisticated, timeless and unique all at the same time. The clients wanted to express their love for Japanese-American craftsmanship, so we incorporated some hints of that motif into the designs. This kitchen design was all about function. The warmth of the walnut cabinetry and flooring and the simplicity of the contemporary cabinet style and open shelving leave room for the gorgeous blue polished quartzite slab focal point used for the oversized island and backsplash. The perimeter countertops are contrasting black textured granite. The high cedar wood ceiling and exposed curved steel beams are dramatic and reveal a roofline nodding to a traditional pagoda design. Striking bronze hanging lights span the space. Vertically grain-matched large drawers provide plenty of storage and the compact pantry’s strategic design fits a coffee maker and Mila appliances.

upgraded the original kitchen in our c1956 ranch. Went with a local custom cabinet maker, Woodworking Unlimited, Hanson, MA and have a long standing relationship with a great GC, James M Cyr, Norwell, MA. We gained a lot of storage and working space into this smaller kitchen (we downsized from a 3000sf colonial) much of it with the thoughtful planning and craftsmanship of the professionals we worked with.

After the unforgettable 2020 shut down we were finally able to get some great pictures of a home we rebuilt after a destructive fire that had burned over 60% of their home. 2020 has been an interesting year for the construction business but thankful we've been able to stay busy & you can look forward to many more project photos to come.

The true farmhouse kitchen. Mixing bold traditional colours, natural elements, shiplap and wooden beamed ceiling details, all make for the perfectly crafted farmhouse. Layering in a traditional farm house sink, and an industrial inspired metal hood fan adds charm and a curated feel to this traditional space. No compromise spared with storage, function or innovation.

A kitchen that was previously boxed in by bulkheads and a peninsula felt even smaller with stained oak cabinets and poor lighting. Light cabinets now fill the available wall space. Not only is there considerably more storage, but the kitchen looks far more open than before. Can lighting and under cabinet lighting provide plenty of general and task lighting.

Multiple cream and white paint tones create a neutral background against the stunning Sea Pearl Quartzite countertops. Polished nickel hardware and plumbing fixtures add a little sparkle to the space. Artistic tile mosaic tile was used for the backsplash inset.
