A busy family of 5 needed a new space for entertaining. The layout proved functional, and with an easy switch of the range and seating areas, a kitchen for entertaining was made. A built in 48" range with a griddle top allows for plenty of space for cooking in the large 10' x 5' island, topped with Taj Mahal Quartzite. Behind the range are fridge and freezer towers, flanked by mirrored pantries that hold everything from spices to canned goods. A large 42" undermount sink spans the breadth of the window that overlooks the canyon beyond. A mirrored hutch balances the side where new French doors open out onto a herb garden. A dry bar matches the cabinetry and increases the space in the grand great room.

Located near the base of Scottsdale landmark Pinnacle Peak, the Desert Prairie is surrounded by distant peaks as well as boulder conservation easements. This 30,710 square foot site was unique in terrain and shape and was in close proximity to adjacent properties. These unique challenges initiated a truly unique piece of architecture. Planning of this residence was very complex as it weaved among the boulders. The owners were agnostic regarding style, yet wanted a warm palate with clean lines. The arrival point of the design journey was a desert interpretation of a prairie-styled home. The materials meet the surrounding desert with great harmony. Copper, undulating limestone, and Madre Perla quartzite all blend into a low-slung and highly protected home. Located in Estancia Golf Club, the 5,325 square foot (conditioned) residence has been featured in Luxe Interiors + Design’s September/October 2018 issue. These clients came to my office looking for an architect who could design their "empty nest" home that would be the focus of their soon to be extended family. A place where the kids and grand kids would want to hang out: with a pool, open family room/ kitchen, garden; but also one-story so there wouldn't be any unnecessary stairs to climb. They wanted the design to feel like "old Pasadena" with the coziness and attention to detail that the era embraced. My sensibilities led me to recall the wonderful classic mansions of San Marino, so I designed a manor house clad in trim Bluestone with a steep French slate roof and clean white entry, eave and dormer moldings that would blend organically with the future hardscape plan and thoughtfully landscaped grounds. The site was a deep, flat lot that had been half of the old Joan Crawford estate; the part that had an abandoned swimming pool and small cabana. I envisioned a pavilion filled with natural light set in a beautifully planted park with garden views from all sides. Having a one-story house allowed for tall and interesting shaped ceilings that carved into the sheer angles of the roof. The most private area of the house would be the central loggia with skylights ensconced in a deep woodwork lattice grid and would be reminiscent of the outdoor “Salas” found in early Californian homes. The family would soon gather there and enjoy warm afternoons and the wonderfully cool evening hours together. Working with interior designer Jeffrey Hitchcock, we designed an open family room/kitchen with high dark wood beamed ceilings, dormer windows for daylight, custom raised panel cabinetry, granite counters and a textured glass tile splash. Natural light and gentle breezes flow through the many French doors and windows located to accommodate not only the garden views, but the prevailing sun and wind as well. The graceful living room features a dramatic vaulted white painted wood ceiling and grand fireplace flanked by generous double hung French windows and elegant drapery. A deeply cased opening draws one into the wainscot paneled dining room that is highlighted by hand painted scenic wallpaper and a barrel vaulted ceiling. The walnut paneled library opens up to reveal the waterfall feature in the back garden. Equally picturesque and restful is the view from the rotunda in the master bedroom suite. We opened up the wall to create an open space to the great room. It was tricky because all of the support and to upstairs bathrooms were in the columns. We skinned the wall to the pantry in the corner to look like cabinetry and flow together. We put flooring up on the ceiling where the hood comes out of to keep it more casual.

It was very obvious that this old kitchen had to be remodeled and that the new kitchen has to provide the perfect functionality of everyday use for this client that really likes to cook. Even though we couldn’t change the original foot print of the kitchen area, with the use of the Alno products and door styles it was possible to organize it into sections of different cooking activities and bring the modern look into the space by using the handle less kitchen system of Alno. The combination of colors and materials kept the flow between the new kitchen area to the other existing parts of this old beautiful house. Door Style Finish: Alno Star Line Nature Line, wood veneer door style, in the carbon oak wood veneer finish, combined with Alno Star Line Satina, matt glass finish door style, in the magnolia white color finish.

The existing kitchen wasn’t cutting it anymore. The homeowners designed and built this home about 20 years ago, but since then, their taste and needs changed. The outdated finishes felt outdated. There weren’t enough work areas. Some counterspace stations were just awkward due to the layout. Adjoining spaces around the kitchen were also in need of an update, but it was decided that the kitchen would undergo a transformation first. Design Objectives -Rework the overall layout (kitchen, laundry and butler’s pantry) to have a better flow and utilize the space better -Incorporate materials with wow and pizzazz to reflect the homeowner’s style -Design large work areas for cooking with two or more people at a time -Provide seating at an island in addition to table seating -Update surrounding spaces since the kitchen is open to the rest of the home Design Challenges: -Include a vast array of cooking appliances while having enough of cabinet storage -Adjacent rooms need to feel updated and flow with new Kitchen -Having multiple focal points with different materials but not have the space feel like a hodge podge -Provide different task, accent and overall lighting to brighten up space Design Solutions: -The homeowner loves to cook and wanted to maximize her abilities. We incorporated a 48” rangetop with a griddle, a single oven, steam oven, microwave drawer and 15” induction cooktop next to a 48” Galley Ideal Workstation with two faucets. In order to have room for all of these appliances, the floor plan needed to accommodate more cabinetry. Both dining room entrances were closed off and the laundry room entrance were moved to the opposite end of the wall to allow two long walls for additional cabinets. -The existing round columns throughout the first floor were outdated. To keep the architectural element of the columns, we wrapped the new columns to have a square shape with a flat panel on all four sides. Then, we painted them black (to tie in with the kitchen tops and curved hood surround) and added simple crown molding. For the flow of the space, closing up the odd corner that connected the laundry and dining room and relocating both room entrances allowed the space to actually feel larger and more continuous. --Adding the same square columns to the main dining room entrance, by the front door, also tied in the front of the house with the kitchen. -The homeowner loves unique and bold materials. The main focal point of the kitchen is definitely the custom metal hood that incorporates two finishes and is set on a Lumix quartzite full-high back and side splashes. To make this area even more pronounced, a hearth-like drywall arch encloses the space. Once your eye moves off the hood, you start to notice the mirrored refrigerator panels, high gloss island cabinets, mirrored metal backsplash tile, delicate pendant island lights and the stunning island countertop material! There is a good mix of materials that make every space shine. The blacks, golds and pewter finishes help tie everything together. -Lighting in a large kitchen is important. This space, besides getting a lot of natural light, needed lots of additional lighting due to the dark finishes. For overall lighting we have plenty of can lights in addition to lighting at the tops of the wall cabinets (that shine on the ceiling), undercabinet task lighting to make the tops sparkle and provide abundant lighting while prepping, pendant accent lighting over the island and a fandolier to add a little sparkle over the pub table. Voila!

Interior Design by Smith & Thomasson Interiors. White painted built-ins and dark wood accents pull together this once disjointed kitchen, dining area and sitting room. As gourmet cooks and gracious hosts, the Owners primary goal for the residential remodel was to create an open space that would be perfect for entertaining and family gatherings. The first course of action in opening up the kitchen was to remove the floor to ceiling bookshelves that obscured the view to the living and dining areas. A furniture-style island and banquette now occupy the space and graciously create a central gathering area around a beautifully appointed pedestal dining table with a wood planked top. Clear views are experienced from all angles of the space now and are conducive to socialization between chef and guests. The range wall is highlighted by a custom copper range hood anchored on a full height backsplash of glass tile made from recycled glass bottles, a modern interpretation of the classic subway tile pattern. Flanking the hood are wood accented upper cabinets with seeded glass insets and painted base cabinets creating a symmetrical elevation. A wall of floor to ceiling timeless flat panel storage cabinets line the back wall of the kitchen, creating a backdrop for the distressed wood armoire style paneled refrigerator. The painted cabinetry extends past the entrance into the sitting area where the existing wood burning fireplace was updated with paneling to match the new cabinetry. Classic neutral furnishings with subtle patterns in the sitting area create the perfect place to read a book or converse with a friend. Immediately upon completion, the Owner’s began cooking and entertaining in their new space. Successful on all counts, the remodel has created a casual yet elegant Great Room in which to spend time with family and friends.

An outdated oak kitchen with panorama views was in desperate need of a remodel for this working family of 5. An inspiration picture with mirrored panels was the take off point for this sophisticated mirror and curved mullion cabinet design. The fridge and freezer are a focal point hidden behind beautiful wood panels and flanked by 5' tall mirrored pantries. Additional storage sets on the counter and acts as the focal point upon entry from the front of the house. New French doors open up where a window once resided, and new windows over the sink reach down to the countertop. A flushmount ceiling hood for the island cooktop disappears into a floating soffit paneled in matching wood. Pendants drip down to anchor the space. A large 66" x 120" island provides ample prep and entertaining space. The bar provides additional entertaining space, which the family does often, hosting up to 100 guests at a time. A cantina door was added at the end of the room, opening up the living and dining space out to the pool deck. Brushed brass faucets, fixtures, and accents add polish and sparkle.
