今回AEGの新ショールームをデザインするにあたって、AEGというブランドの魅力はなんだろう？他ブランドとの違いはなんだろう？を考えた。その時に1907年に就任したデザイン顧問Peter Behrensの言葉『デザインはその物の特性に合った形状を作ること、そして新しい技術を引き立てること』を知る。それは“FORM AND FUNCTION COMBINE（形状と機能の融合）”であり、それが“FORM AND FUNCTION EVOLVE（形状と機能の進化）”をもたらすことを示している。 この話をいただいた時、たくさんのヒアリングとディスカッションを繰り返し、そこから生まれた小さなアイディアを膨らませ、イメージを重ね合わせるという作業を繰り返した。 その結果、600mmモデュールのフレーム構造を採用し、そこにAEGの赤いロゴマークが浮かび上がる空間をイメージする。その背景として『黒』を合わせるが、全てのパーツは単純でフラットな黒ではなく、ムラがある黒塗装のフレーム、黒いクォーツストーンの天板、北海道産ナラ材の厚突板を黒く酸化させた面材、床、壁、天井、、、と様々な表情とストーリーを持った『黒』を組み合わせている。まさに『COLORFUL BLACK』であり、『黒』はもはや色ではなくマテリアルのひとつなんだと認識することができる。 こうすることでAEGのロゴがより強調され、且つビルトインされたキッチン家電も主役として空間の中に存在することができる。
