ASID Design Excellence First Place Residential – Kitchen: Originally commissioned in 1977 by our clients, this residence was designed by renowned architect Donald Olsen whose life's work is thoroughly documented in the book Donald Olsen: Architect of Habitable Abstractions. Michael Merrill Design Studio was approached three years ago to do a comprehensive rethinking of the structure, spaces and the exterior envelope. We hope you will enjoy this preview of the greatly enlarged and updated kitchen and home office.

Custom-designed contemporary home bar glass cabinets, white crown molding with indirect lighting, staircase lighting and custom tile in Lake Arrowhead, California.

A smokebell light fixture adds a hint of shine to the space, contrasting well with the white of the exterior cabinetry and the deep brown walnut of the countertops and cabinet interiors.

A pass through bar was created between the dining area and the hallway, allowing custom cabinetry, a wine fridge and mosaic tile and stone backsplash to live. The client's collection of blown glass stemware are showcased in the lit cabinets above the serving stations that have hand-painted French tiles within their backsplash.

Custom buffet cabinet in the dining room can be opened up to reveal a wet bar with a gorgeous granite top, glass shelving and copper sink.. Home design by Phil Jenkins, AIA, Martin Bros. Upon opening the custom bi-fold doors, the bar is now on display for easy access. The built-in bar features three shelves for glassware, six drawers for miscellaneous items, an integrated sink, and a hidden granite counter-top. It also boasts LED dimming light strips. Custom kitchen with white cabinetry on the perimeter and navy island which matched the navy color of the Butler's pantry here. Dolomite Marble slab countertops - Luca de Luna, these were originally listed as a Quartzite and then changed to a Marble. Luckily, after much testing with red wine, lemon juice and vinegar on the slab sample, the client still loved it and decided to use it. Ann Sacks Herringbone mosaic accent at range with Cadenza Clay tile backsplash. Pendant lights shipped from London as the original ones were out of stock in the U. S.

Net Zero House. Architect: Barley|Pfeiffer. The bar area is directly across from the dining room. This provides convenient storage and easy access to the wine fridge. The hidden door in the massaranduba-clad wall serves as an entry closet.

Our clients hired us to completely renovate and furnish their PEI home — and the results were transformative. Inspired by their natural views and love of entertaining, each space in this PEI home is distinctly original yet part of the collective whole. We used color, patterns, and texture to invite personality into every room: the fish scale tile backsplash mosaic in the kitchen, the custom lighting installation in the dining room, the unique wallpapers in the pantry, powder room and mudroom, and the gorgeous natural stone surfaces in the primary bathroom and family room. We also hand-designed several features in every room, from custom furnishings to storage benches and shelving to unique honeycomb-shaped bar shelves in the basement lounge. The result is a home designed for relaxing, gathering, and enjoying the simple life as a couple.

Wet bar features glass cabinetry with glass shelving to showcase the owners' alcohol collection, a paneled Sub Zero wine frig with glass door and paneled drawers, arabesque glass tile back splash and a custom crystal stemware cabinet with glass doors and glass shelving. This was a kitchen remodel which included edits to the adjoining dining room, addition of a butler’s pantry and bar. The space was taken down to the studs, new flooring was installed, new windows were added over the kitchen sink, new lighting, kitchen/pantry/bar cabinetry, countertops and custom tiled backsplash.
