Other historic traces remain such as the feeding trough, now converted into bench seating. However, the renovation includes many updates as well. A dual toned herringbone Endicott brick floor replaces the slab floor formerly sloped for drainage.

The Sonoma Farmhaus project was designed for a cycling enthusiast with a globally demanding professional career, who wanted to create a place that could serve as both a retreat of solitude and a hub for gathering with friends and family. Located within the town of Graton, California, the site was chosen not only to be close to a small town and its community, but also to be within cycling distance to the picturesque, coastal Sonoma County landscape. Taking the traditional forms of farmhouse, and their notions of sustenance and community, as inspiration, the project comprises an assemblage of two forms - a Main House and a Guest House with Bike Barn - joined in the middle by a central outdoor gathering space anchored by a fireplace. The vision was to create something consciously restrained and one with the ground on which it stands. Simplicity, clear detailing, and an innate understanding of how things go together were all central themes behind the design. Solid walls of rammed earth blocks, fabricated from soils excavated from the site, bookend each of the structures. According to the owner, the use of simple, yet rich materials and textures...“provides a humanness I’ve not known or felt in any living venue I’ve stayed, Farmhaus is an icon of sustenance for me".

The abundance of natural light in this modern split-level extension allowed us to use a really bold colour for the handmade Shaker style kitchen units which were sprayed and lacquered in Farrow & Ball Hague Blue. The brass handles from Rowen & Wren create a lovely contrast with the deep blue colour of the units. #KitchenIdeas #ShakerstyleKitchens

This residence was designed to be a rural weekend getaway for a city couple and their children. The idea of ‘The Barn’ was embraced, as the building was intended to be an escape for the family to go and enjoy their horses. The ground floor plan has the ability to completely open up and engage with the sprawling lawn and grounds of the property. This also enables cross ventilation, and the ability of the family’s young children and their friends to run in and out of the building as they please. Cathedral-like ceilings and windows open up to frame views to the paddocks and bushland below. As a weekend getaway and when other families come to stay, the bunkroom upstairs is generous enough for multiple children. The rooms upstairs also have skylights to watch the clouds go past during the day, and the stars by night. Australian hardwood has been used extensively both internally and externally, to reference the rural setting.

The customer wanted to make a feature of the steel support beam in the centre of the kitchen and its position was also where they wanted a centre island to be constructed. Our solution was use a contrasting 40mm oak stave worksurface that we seamlessly shaped around the vertical support beam. The beam gives the kitchen a cool industrial look which is complimented by the client’s choice of stainless steel range cooker and brushed steel and copper pendant lights. The centre island also incorporates a breakfast bar while the wood worksurface compliments the stripped pine floor in the adjoining room. #ShakerKitchens #KitchenDesignIdeas #IndustrialStyleKitchens

The reconfiguration allowed for widened hallways and more natural light to flow into all spaces. Grey porcelain tile is a beautiful compliment to the white walls and trim. The butcher block of the kitchen peninsula is cascaded all the way to the floor. Whimsical animal wallpaper adds the pop of interest and color to the kitchen in the remodel designed and completed by Meadowlark Design + Build in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

This warm and inviting farmhouse kitchen was built for cooking and entertaining. Wide open spaces, natural wood accents and a beadboard ceiling make this space feel like home, The hand made butcher block countertop adds a touch of charm and function and is a sure conversation starter.
