The 800 square-foot guest cottage is located on the footprint of a slightly smaller original cottage that was built three generations ago. With a failing structural system, the existing cottage had a very low sloping roof, did not provide for a lot of natural light and was not energy efficient. Utilizing high performing windows, doors and insulation, a total transformation of the structure occurred. A combination of clapboard and shingle siding, with standout touches of modern elegance, welcomes guests to their cozy retreat. The cottage consists of the main living area, a small galley style kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom and sleeping loft above. The loft construction was a timber frame system utilizing recycled timbers from the Balsams Resort in northern New Hampshire. The stones for the front steps and hearth of the fireplace came from the existing cottage’s granite chimney. Stylistically, the design is a mix of both a “Cottage” style of architecture with some clean and simple “Tech” style features, such as the air-craft cable and metal railing system. The color red was used as a highlight feature, accentuated on the shed dormer window exterior frames, the vintage looking range, the sliding doors and other interior elements. An urban townhome gets a sophisticated farmhouse influenced makeover. This home had a small, closed off kitchen which was not functional for this busy family. By removing the wall to the dining room the house is open from front to back, creating a large, open space for family fun, dining and entertainment. The kitchen features contrasting cabinets with a light wood finish on the base cabinets contrasting with white uppers. The butler's pantry area features glass front cabinets to keep the space open and airy. Marble backsplash with a contrasting patterned backsplash accent at the microwave bar adds texture, color and interest. The peninsula is perfect for entertaining and features a farmhouse sink and rustic pendant lighting. The kitchen opens to the dining room and the great room. This has become a beautiful, functional kitchen and entertainment space for a family on the go.

With just 80 SF to work with, we made the most of this small kitchen by opening up a wall to the living area, adding more counter space for prep work/seating and installing custom wall shelving for more storage. Keeping a simple black & white palette, makes the salvaged barn wood shelves the star of the show. Cast iron shelf brackets, caged wire light fixtures and matte black cabinet hardware contribute to the rustic vibe. We also refinished the maple floors a rich honey brown. キッチンは美味しい食事を作るためには欠かせないスペース。毎日使う場所だからこそ、機能性だけではなくおしゃれさにもこだわりたいものです。ここでは、使い勝手の良さやおしゃれさにこだわったカントリー風のペニンシュラキッチンのリフォーム事例と、ペニンシュラキッチンリフォームのポイントをご紹介します。

ペニンシュラキッチンの改善ポイントを考える

Ⅰ型ペニンシュラキッチンは最も一般的なレイアウトで、シンク、調理台、コンロ、冷蔵庫が横一線に並んだタイプのペニンシュラキッチンです。最近では、対面カウンターを付けて背面に収納スペースと冷蔵庫を置くなど、Ⅱ型やアイランド型に似たタイプのレイアウトも人気です。
Ⅱ型ペニンシュラキッチン
Ⅱ型キッチンはシンク、調理台、コンロ、冷蔵庫を2カ所に分け、平行に配置することで調理スペースを広げるレイアウトです。調理の際の動線が短くなるというメリットがあります。
L型ペニンシュラキッチン
L型ペニンシュラキッチンは、シンク、調理台、コンロがL字型に配置されたレイアウトです。ワークトライアングルを作りやすく、動線をコンパクトに抑えることができます。
アイランドペニンシュラキッチン
アイランドペニンシュラキッチンは独立型ペニンシュラキッチンとも呼ばれ、シンク、調理台などを壁面から独立させて設置するレイアウトです。調理台を囲むように作業ができるため、家族や友人など複数で楽しみながらキッチンを共有できます。ホームパーティーや料理教室をする際にも便利でしょう。
ペニンシュラペニンシュラキッチン
ペニンシュラは英語で「半島」を意味します。ペニンシュラキッチンの左右どちらかが壁に接しているレイアウトを指します。調理スペースがオープンになっているため、リビングやダイニングにいる方とコミュニケーションを取りながら調理できるというメリットがあります。

ビルトイン機器の選択

カントリー風のペニンシュラキッチンタイプのレイアウト見直しと同時に、ビルトイン機器も検討されてみてはいかがでしょうか。ビルトイン機器とは、建物や家具、設備などの中に組み込んで利用する機器を指します。システムキッチンには、ビルトインコンロ、レンジフード、オーブンレンジ、食器洗浄乾燥機を組み込むことが可能です。ビルトインであればスタイリッシュにペニンシュラキッチンに溶け込み、インテリアの邪魔にもなりません。新築やリフォームの際に取り入れることをおすすめします。

ビルトインコンロには、それぞれ火力の異なるバーナーを組み合わせた3つ口タイプが一般的です。天板素材はガラストップが主流となっていますが、他にガラスコート、フッ素コート、ホーロー、アルミ、ステンレスなどがあります。使い勝手やデザイン、価格などを考慮して選択しましょう。
食器洗浄乾燥機
食器洗浄乾燥機 (食洗機) は手洗いよりも少ない水量できれいに食器を洗浄することができるため、新築やペニンシュラキッチンのリフォーム時には食洗機の導入をおすすめします。国内製のビルトイン食洗機の場合は引き出し式になっているタイプが多いのに対し、海外製のビルトイン食洗機は前開き式になっているものが一般的です。国内製・海外製それぞれで、設置業者や設置可能なシステムペニンシュラキッチンが異なる場合があるため注意しましょう。

収納スペースのアイデア
