Character and charm are abundant in this main floor remodel. The home edged toward a traditional style going in and we chose to honor this feel and carry it throughout while updating the space. From a space-planning perspective, the first volley was to remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room and let the light shine in. And shine in it does! The numerous windows stayed in place and now do their job allowing light to flow from room to room. Those very windows are trimmed in natural white oak and paired with arched wood-cased openings to add warmth to the scene. Wood beams between the kitchen and the family room and new stone on the fireplace add a nuanced rustic touch while keeping with the overall feel of the home. These organic elements beautifully offset the crisp whites and blues found everywhere you look. A patterned tile offers visual interest in the backsplash and travels from the counters to the ceiling bringing the eye with it. Orb-like woven pendant lights lend texture and interest to the marble topped island and brushed gold accent task lighting hangs above the apron sink. When a traditional style is held in high regard, and implemented well, it is nothing short of priceless.

This remodel is a stunning 100-year-old Wayzata home! The home’s history was embraced while giving the home a refreshing new look. Every aspect of this renovation was thoughtfully considered to turn the home into a "DREAM HOME" for generations to enjoy. With Mingle designed cabinetry throughout several rooms of the home, there is plenty of storage and style. “We were able to let natural light into the kitchen from both the east side and west side of the house. Before the remodel, our kitchen was dark because of the color scheme and having only the one window on the east side of the house. Now our kitchen/dining room is full of natural light!” The couple chose Semihandmade’s 30″ white Supermatte Shaker cabinetry and Shaker drawers along with white IKEA UTRUSTA shelving and drawer fronts and corner base cabinets with pullout fittings; white IKEA MAXIMERA drawers and pullout interior fittings.

What a difference it made to take that wall down! We had to put a large beam in the ceiling and support it in the sides walls with metal columns all the way down to the basement to make this structurally sound.

The heart of this home is most definitely the kitchen! We erased every trace of the original builder kitchen and created a space that welcomes one and all. The glorious island, with its light cabinetry and dramatic quartz countertop, provides the perfect gathering place for morning coffee and baking sessions. At the perimeter of the kitchen, we selected a handsome grey finish with a brushed linen effect for an extra touch of texture that ties in with the high variation backsplash tile giving us a softened handmade feel. Black metal accents from the hardware to the light fixtures unite the kitchen with the rest of the home.

With a focus on their passions of beekeeping and herb gardening, this retired couple saw potential in this rural home they bought in 2013. They asked us for suggestions on how best to enclose and expand a breezeway from the home to the garage to include two stories, add a room over the garage, and nearly double the size of the kitchen. The lowered “biscuit counter” in the island is an ideal height for rolling out dough and getting help from the grandkids. Pantry access is through a screen door. Load-bearing walls were removed, the stairway was reconstructed, the previous breezeway was transformed into a small bathroom and a mud/laundry space. Above that was added another small bathroom, an herb prep room, complete with a stove, double sink and small fridge, plus another bedroom. Exterior drainage issues also needed attention, so we dug out along the back of the home, added French drains to evacuate the excess water, plus and a small, rock retaining wall.
