When these homeowners first approached me to help them update their kitchen, the first thing that came to mind was to open it up. The house was over 70 years old and the kitchen was a small boxed in area, that did not connect well to the large addition on the back of the house. Removing the former exterior, load bearinig, wall opened the space up dramatically. Then, I relocated the sink to the new peninsula and the range to the outside wall. New windows were added to flank the range. The homeowner is an architect and designed the stunning hood that is truly the focal point of the room. The shiplap island is a complex work that hides 3 drawers and spice storage. The original slate floors have radiant heat under them and needed to remain. The new greige cabinet color, with the accent of the dark grayish green on the custom furnuture piece and hutch, truly compiment the floor tones. Added features such as the wood beam that hides the support over the peninsula and doorway helped warm up the space. There is also a feature wall of stained shiplap that ties in the wood beam and ship lap details on the island.

Dimensional textures, a color palate inspired by nature and the blend of multiple wood finishes create a striking kitchen that beautifully balances contrast and cohesion. Rift cut white oak, walnut and painted maple cabinetry from Grabill Cabinets all exist harmoniously in the space and provide ample storage and cooking space. With the goal of creating larger, brighter, and more open spaces within the footprint of an existing house, BiglarKinyan reimagined the flow and proportions of existing rooms with in this house. In this kitchen space, return walls of an original U shaped kitchen were eliminated to create a long and efficient linear kitchen with island. Rear windows facing a ravine were enlarged to invite more light and views indoors. Space was borrowed from an adjacent dining and living room, which was combined and reproportioned to create a kitchen pantry and bar, larger dining room and a piano lounge.

Wow, look how that cabinetry beautifully fills the space! A four-seater island with a grand, thick countertop takes center stage in this Kitchen. White oak accents set off the painted cabinetry, and a matching white oak library ladder can be hung along the rails above all the wall cabinets, for access to the highest heights.

A large family gathering space was the driving idea when the kitchen was laid out. The contrasting island with seating for six on a daily basis takes the place of a kitchen table. With the vaulted ceiling bathed in light this relaxing kitchen feels comfortable from breakfast through dinner!
