Redonner à la façade côté jardin une dimension domestique était l’un des principaux enjeux de ce projet, qui avait déjà fait l’objet d’une première extension. Il s’agissait également de réaliser des travaux de rénovation énergétique comprenant l’isolation par l’extérieur de toute la partie Est de l’habitation. Les tasseaux de bois donnent à la partie basse un aspect chaleureux, tandis que des ouvertures en aluminium anthracite, dont le rythme resserré affirme un style industriel rappelant l’ancienne véranda, donnent sur une grande terrasse en béton brut au rez-de-chaussée. En partie supérieure, le bardage horizontal en tôle nervurée anthracite vient contraster avec le bois, tout en résonnant avec la teinte des menuiseries. Grâce à l’accord entre les matières et à la subdivision de cette façade en deux langages distincts, l’effet de verticalité est estompé, instituant ainsi une nouvelle échelle plus intimiste et accueillante.

A cantilevered wood screen creates a private entrance by passing underneath the offset vertical aligned western red cedar timbers of the brise-soleil. The offset wood screen creates a path between the exterior walls of the house and the exterior planters (see next photo) which leads to a quiet pond at the top of the low-rise concrete steps and eventually the entry door to the residence: A vertical courtyard / garden buffer. The wood screen creates privacy from the interior to the street while also softening the strong, afternoon direct natural light to the entry, kitchen, living room, bathroom and study.

愛媛県の久万高原の杉を９０％以上使用した住宅。伐採ツアーで伐採した杉を使用。自然乾燥させ粘り強い架構を実現。軒の深い佇まいとし、屋内と庭が緩やかに繋がる設計とした。南北に開口部を設け「光」と「風」が住宅に心地よく入る間取りとしている。バリアフリー住宅の仕様で素材を活かした内装としている。床も３０ｍｍの杉板、壁は真壁、勾配天井には杉板を設置し、気密性の高い省エネ住宅としつつも、吸湿効果の高い住宅としている。内部の建具はすべて造作の木製建具とし、使いやすいようにすべての開口部を幅の広めな引戸とした。

The extension is built with a timber frame and highly insulated. External material choices are tactile yet natural, including charred timber cladding, composite glazing, and a clay tiled roof with black zinc detailing.

New Moroccan Villa on the Santa Barbara Riviera, overlooking the Pacific ocean and the city. In this terra cotta and deep blue home, we used natural stone mosaics and glass mosaics, along with custom carved stone columns. Every room is colorful with deep, rich colors. In the master bath we used blue stone mosaics on the groin vaulted ceiling of the shower. All the lighting was designed and made in Marrakesh, as were many furniture pieces. The entry black and white columns are also imported from Morocco. We also designed the carved doors and had them made in Marrakesh. Cabinetry doors we designed were carved in Canada. The carved plaster molding were made especially for us, and all was shipped in a large container (just before covid-19 hit the shipping world!) The brief for redesigning this oak-framed, three-bay garage was for a self-contained, fully equipped annex for a couple that felt practical, yet distinctive and luxurious. The answer was to use one ’bay’ for the double bedroom with full wall height storage and ensuite with a generous shower, and then use the other two bays for the open plan dining and living areas. The original wooden beams and oak workspaces sit alongside cobalt blue walls and blinds with industrial style lighting and shelving.

Inspired by the classic Ontario farmhouse, this gorgeous custom Loyalist features dark board-and-batten siding, white accents, and a strikingly beautiful red roof. The spacious porch wraps all the way around the back and the large windows offer breathtaking views of the property.

築8０年の長屋をフルリノベーション。 屋根を一部架け替え、家の形に整えた外観は、可愛らしい姿に生まれ変わりました。 色彩が可愛らしさを増しながらも、周辺にはビックリするほど、馴染んでいます。正面・東側の人通りの多い通り側の窓は小さくし、プライバシーを確保し、南側窓は大きくし光を明るく取り入れながら、ルーバーテラスや土間空間を挟むことでこちらも、 プライベート空間を確保し、不安感をなくしています。

Our design solution was to literally straddle the old building with an almost entirely new shell of Strawbale, hence the name Russian Doll House. A house inside a house. Keeping the existing frame, the ceiling lining and much of the internal partitions, new strawbale external walls were placed out to the verandah line and a steeper pitched truss roof was supported over the existing post and beam structure. A couple of perpendicular gable roof forms created some additional floor area and also taller ceilings. The house is designed with Passive house principles in mind. It requires very little heating over Winter and stays naturally cool in Summer.
