The cottage style exterior of this newly remodeled ranch in Connecticut, belies its transitional interior design. The exterior of the home features wood shingle siding along with pvc trim work, a gently flared beltline separates the main level from the walk out lower level at the rear. Also on the rear of the house where the addition is most prominent there is a cozy deck, with maintenance free cable railings, a quaint gravel patio, and a garden shed with its own patio and fire pit gathering area.

The south facade of the Johnson Residence was a new approach to passive solar design. The generous employment of glazed areas on this elevation are shaded by projecting modernist pergolas. In addition, the greenhouse seen to the left in this picture has a shading device and is separated from the main space of the home while bringing superheated air inside by natural and mechanical means. Intentional design "tricks" keep the flat roofed single story plan from looking boring with changes in roof elevation, the various shading "beams", and low walls which imply outdoor rooms projected into the landscape. arch@jkadesign.net

West Amwell, NJ. This stunning Historic 1730 Stone Farmhouse was in need of window replacements throughout. A&E installed energy efficient Marvin Ultimate Double Hung windows which keep with the traditional aesthetic of the home, but provide state-of-the-art window performance. Inside, window trim was added when needed and the deep window sills were painted bone white for a crisp, clean look.

The House and Garage were Completely Transformed to Craftsman Style. The Original Garage was Replaced with a New Detached Garage with a Higher Roof Line Including Storage.

Built in 1948 on a hill high above Compo Cove and Sherwood Millpond, the original bungalow underwent a major renovation in 2000 during which a second story was added in a contemporized Nantucket style vocabulary. In 2015, Scott Springer Architect was hired to design an expansion of the second floor. The directive of the clients was to closely match the massing and details of the existing structure and allow the addition to appear as if it had always been a part of the house. The addition is comprised of a new bathroom and corridor over the vaulted entrance hall—which remained undisturbed during construction—and two bedrooms and a laundry room over the existing garage. Windows at the east side of the addition allow for spectacular views of Long Island Sound while the windows on the other side overlook a patio and garden. The garden mews house is set within a victorian kitchen garden space. The central location means that the gardens around the house against the brick walls are retained and can be viewed from the interior of the house.
