This two-bed property in East London is a great example of clever spatial planning. The room was 1.4m by 4.2m, so we didn't have much to work with. We made the most of the space by integrating slimline appliances, such as the 450 dishwasher and 150 wine cooler. This enabled the client to have exactly what they wanted in the kitchen function-wise, along with having a really nicely designed space that worked with the industrial nature of the property.

Birch Plywood Kitchen with recessed J handles and stainless steel recessed kick-board with a floating plywood shelf that sits above a splash back of geometric tiles. Plants, decorative and kitchen accessories sit on the shelf. The movable plywood island is on large orange castors and has a stainless steel worktop and contains a single oven and induction hob. The back of the island is a peg-board with a hand painted panel behind so that all the colours show through the holes. Pegs are used to hang toys and on. Orange and yellow curly cables provide the electrical connection to the oven and hob. The perimeter run of cabinets has a concrete worktop and houses the sink and tall integrated fridge/freezer and slimline full height larder with internal pull out drawers. This was accomplished by removing a load bearing wall and installing new Milgard windows and sliding glass doors. The resulting high ceiling and exposed beam is a show stopping feature, and the mosaic glass tile backsplash extends from countertop to ceiling along the angled wall, drawing your eye to the kitchen and showcasing the vaulted ceiling. The kitchen island offers a dividing line between the food preparation zones and the entertaining zone in this great room style space. The island includes a Kohler sink and an induction cooktop with Best’s Cattura downdraft ventilation. The white Wood Mode-Brookhaven cabinets are beautifully offset by the Aqua Shade island cabinetry, all topped by a Cambria quartz countertop. Custom Surface Solutions ( https://www.houzz.com/pro/csstile/__public) - Owner Craig Thompson. I consulted remotely (Round Rock, TX) with a DIY friend remotely (Morgan Hill, CA) on his kitchen backsplash, island toe kick, and countertop remodel project. He provided the labor and materials and I coached him remotely through the project. We collaborated on ideas and tile selections, installation methods and suggestions. A multi-colored 4" x 4" Fireclay tile was used to achieve the desired look. In addition, quartz countertops were installed to complete the kitchen. The project came out great as you can see! Focus was placed on the aesthetic, as well as on the function. One important characteristic of the project was conceiving the house as a refuge, a cozy place after a tiring day of work and an oasis of silence in the urban chaos. Personality and individuality were infused by custom made furniture (adjusted to the dimensions of the rooms for rational use of space), well-chosen statement furniture pieces (dining table, wall clock, lighting, nightstands, vanity desk chair, etc.) and attention to details. Breaking the monotony was accomplished by unexpected combinations of textures and materials: slate on the furniture fronts, wood, painted MDF, cow leather carpet. The main stylistic direction is given by elegant lines that evoke Classicism but strongly anchored into the present day, while at the same time maintaining simple and clean graphics. Good communication with the beneficiaries led to an interior design concept that emphasizes the qualities of their home.
