This is the second complete bathroom remodel I've had Craig do for me. Last summer was the master bath. This summer was the guest bath. As like before, it turned out fantastic. Craig was a perfectionist as usual. Takes whatever extra time is necessary to make sure the job is done correctly. He keeps you informed as to issues, problems, etc every step of the way. With this bathroom, he uncovered horrible old termite and water damage in the exterior wall. He suggested and I agreed to replace everything to the exterior brick. I could not be happier with how the finished product looks. His estimating and billing process is line item detail, easy to see what the cost will be and then what you are paying for as the job proceeds. He also cleans up the work space every day. Like I stated in my review from last year, my greatest compliment I can give him is that he treats the job as if it were his own home. Can't ask for anything better.

We had Craig Thompson of Custom Surface Solutions upgrade our master bath and kitchen. He did an outstanding job. We recommend him highly to anyone redecorating or repairing a bathroom or kitchen. He is very professional and provides detailed estimates and billing and stayed within our budget. He works pretty much alone, so it takes a little longer, but the result is definitely worth waiting for. He sweats the details. For example, our bathroom tile had a subtle pattern that most installers would have ignored. But Craig laid out all of the tile pieces and matched the patterns to give a natural flow to the resulting installation. He's extremely neat and minimizes the disruption and mess while completing the job. He is always ready to provide his advice as to the best solutions to design issues and we always proceeded with his recommendations. We were out of town for portions of his work but felt completely comfortable giving him access to our house while we were away. We can't say enough about the great experience we had working with Craig.

Craig is a fabulous craftsman and I would recommend him to anyone needing help with their kitchen or bathroom. We first worked with Craig when he re-tiled our kitchen backsplash, taking it from an avocado green to a fresh white. He was detail-oriented, precise, and was able to keep the kitchen clean and dust-free with his careful tarping and daily clean-up. Our kitchen looks amazing! We needed him to come back when we had a leak in our shower pan, necessitating ripping out the floor of our master shower, replacing the pan and re-tiling the shower. The shower is now beautiful; he even suggested a new bench for the shower that makes a huge difference in the space. He is trustworthy, precise, and such a pleasure to work with. I will only call Craig for any tile or home surface needs!

I hired Craig to redo my master bath. I wanted to replace an old Jacuzzi tub with a walk in shower as well as new walls, floor, toilet, ceiling fan, etc. The job ended up being more involved than originally expected. Craig found severe water damage in the shower wall, which required replacing studs, insulation, and sheetrock. He could have easily covered it up and moved on, apparently that's what the renovation team did when I bought the house 15 years ago and had the tub installed. The job was completed on Friday with the installation of the frameless shower doors. I could not be happier with the outcome. Not only does it look great, but the workmanship is top notch. I told Craig the highest compliment I can give someone is that they treated the job as if it were their own home. He is a meticulous perfectionist when it comes to his work. He shows up when he says he'll be there, puts in whatever hours are necessary to move the job along, and impeccably cleans up the worksite every day before he leaves. His itemized invoices are great in that you see every line item for what he is billing. Not just some lump sum amount due with a minimal description. I consider myself very lucky that I found him online through this website. I am in the process of having him give me an estimate on a guest bath redo.

We have a rental home that needed A LOT of love as it had been neglected by the management company and tenants. After an exhausted search and numerous interviews, I was very fortunate to find CSS. The original scope of work was HUGE and diverse including but not limited to, painting, woodwork, tile removal and installation, plumbing, electrical and sheetrock. What I especially appreciated about CSS was that besides performing the tasks on the list, they also saw items that were not on the list that needed to be addressed. Craig took our master bathroom out and completely remodeled it. Although we did not significantly change the layout it was not a simple project. Our floor needed leveling, we added heat under the floors, changed the faucets to come out from the wall, and wanted a larger shower with a complicated glass enclosure in addition to all new tile, vanities, and tub. We were looking for someone who was very detail oriented and who would do an excellent job. Craig was perfect- he is reliable, honest, professional, neat, organized, easy to get along with, and when he’s finished you have an excellent end product. He manages the few subcontractors he uses well and straightens out any issues with them (usually before you even notice). His wife Karon is amazing at selecting components that will result in a cohesive look. It was clear from his estimate he has the experience to know what will need to be done and billing is straightforward and clear. There are so many small things that can be just slightly off and have the final result look a little less than perfect, but Craig is meticulous in making sure that everything is exactly right. My dog misses his company and we will use him again for future projects.

Craig did a great job changing out our back splash in the kitchen. We picked a glass subway tile and it dresses up the entire kitchen. He is a true artisan. Very diligent, clean and careful in his work. We plan to use him again next year with our bathroom remodel.

I couldn't be any happier with Craig's work! He describes himself as "OCD", but his attention to detail and inability to compromise on quality is what made the experience so fantastic for me. We selected a challenging tile (one with an infinity pattern on all 4 edges), and asked him to place it into a challenging location (wrapping around corners, tucked into inner corners, etc). Instead of banging it out, he walked me through ideas he had for how to accomplish it, and took extreme care to make sure the end product looked amazing. In addition to the great craftsmanship, Craig made sure to clean the entire area every night before leaving so that our house wouldn't be unusable for the duration of the project. Our shower glass exploded and our glass company recommended CSS to add additional tile and replace tiles with now unneeded drill holes. Craig, the owner, came out, assessed the issue, made recommendations and fixed the problems. He arrived on time, was knowledgeable, neat and did an excellent job. We plan on a replacing wood floors with tile and will use CSS to do the job.

Craig and Karen surpassed our expectations. This was by far the best experience we have had with a contractor. They took care of everything and a professional and efficient manner from design consultation material selection and installation and labor. We loved the detailed estimate and only having to deal with one person. This is the ultimate one stop shop! This team was always on time and communicated wonderfully to make sure we had realistic expectations and worked hard to meet our timeline. I have already recommended them to a friend!

Craig did an excellent job on our bathroom remodel! We had met with several contractors for estimates and didn't feel comfortable with most as they weren't able to provide us with detailed estimates allowing for flexibility. From the beginning, Craig appeared knowledgeable, professional and gave us a very detailed estimate. He did demo down to the studs to remove our old tub and convert it to a shower. He was able to re-frame a large part of the wall due to old termite damage and after that, the process moved swiftly. He does excellent tile work and has a great eye for detail as well as great technique. He worked daily (taking weekends off which was nice for all of us) and diligently to get the job done. He was very neat, which was a big deal for me since we have two children and I dislike messes! We plan on having him back in the future to work on our second bathroom.

We needed to get the kitchen countertop cutout slightly enlarged to accomadate a new cooktop. Craig came over and determined that the existing cutout was fine as-is. He dropped the new unit in after an unexpected trip to Home Depot to get a long gas line and fired the new cooktop right up. No, this wasn't an epic tile or granite job but I had been looking at having the cutout done and scheduling the install the same day so we wouldn't be without a cooktop. Craig did the whole enchilada. I'll be calling him again for his services when the time comes. By the way, our Nexdoor Neighbor blog is used by a pretty tight knit bunch in our area and that's where he came highly recommended. We weren't disappointed! A true craftsman and all around great guy.

Craig is an excellent master of his craft. His work is beautiful. Our house flooded on Memorial Day and required a lot of work to get it back together. We decided to go ahead and remodel our bathrooms and have tile flooring put in during the repairs. We were lucky enough to have found Craig through a retail tile store that caters to tile contractors. After we contacted him, he quickly came out to do the measurements. Our next meeting was “accidentally” at the tile store where he took the time to select some title options that would complement our kitchen granite counter-tops. We are “beige” people but Craig pulled us out of our comfort zone and suggested a tile and design that we love. We were nervous all the way up until the final reveal. The product delivered was a kitchen back-splash comprised of a beautiful glass subway tile with stone and glass accents. The tile is not only beautiful but the work Craig did is reflective of a true professional. There were some custom cutting required and odd shaped angles that he had to contend with but the end results were a tile landscape that is balanced and snug with smooth even grout.

Craig did a wonderful job of updating an entry wall of our home with mosaic travertine tile. He was very timely and professional and I look forward to using him on other remodeling projects and referring him to others.

Craig Thompson of CSS did a fantastic job on all 3 of the projects he did for us. On our 1988 built house, Craig replaced our kitchen backsplash and added under-cabinet lighting, and additional creative tile work, and complete top to bottom remodel of our guest and master baths. Besides doing a great job on the work, what I really liked about Craig was his attention to detail. He recognized the potential issues in advance, and performed extra measures to assure we would be happy. He also did a great job in cleaning up the work areas every day, and making sure the non- work areas were usable. Also stayed on the estimated budget.

We used Craig to install a tile backsplash in our kitchen. He was professional with his communication, bid, and work. When he arrived to install the backsplash, he pointed out the problems with our granite countertop installation and he managed to cover up the installation errors by double drywalling, shimming out the walls, and using pencil tile to hide imperfections. He found ways to make tricky intersections look seamless. We couldn't be happier with his work.

Craig is great! We first hired him to tile our master bathroom, he did such a great job we kept hiring him back. Craig is a true craftsman who takes pride in doing the job right. He installed a back splash for our new granite counter top and took great care to protect them during the installation. We are very pleased with the job that Craig did for us. We had him cover an existing brick hearth and fireplace front with large marble tile. Craig was meticulous in making sure that joints were accurate and tight. He took great care that the individual tiles lined up. He also did a good job matching natural color and patterns in the marble. One very important thing for us was that Craig took great care so that he did not damage our wood floor or create a mess inside our house. He always cleaned up before he left for the day.

Craig did an outstanding job adding tile to our kitchen island re-build project. The workmanship and attention to detail was very good. He also maintained the schedule, working significant overtime to ensure that the project was completed on time. We will re-hire him as we do additional tile renovation work in our home.

This company is top notch. The initial estimate was accurate and they helped me find a tile store that gave me a great bargain! The job was finished when they said it would be and my kitchen looks fantastic. I did get bids that were less expensive, but I don't know that the end result would have been the same. I would use them again to be sure!

Craig was a pleasure to do business with and his tile work was top-notch - we're very happy with the tile installation he did for our bathroom remodel project and will very likely hire him again for future tile projects. My wife and I hired Craig to redo our fireplace. We wanted him to remove some black tile and replace it with stone. It was an intricate job because the stone was very fragile yet had to be cut perfectly to fit with the other pieces. Craig took his time and did an amazing job! It was a difficult job and some problems did arise, but Craig worked diligently to correct the issue and make sure we were fully satisfied. I highly recommend Craig!

CSS was hired to install tile back splash in our kitchen. Craig had to tear out the old sheet rock and install new sheet rock before he could start installing the tile. The tear-out job was, as expected, messy. He installed plastic to keep the dust from spreading. He was very careful installing the new sheet rock, ensuring plumb and flat walls. He did an excellent job of cleaning up after finishing the day's job. He installed all the tile on the second day. I was impressed with the precision and pace of his work. He steadily measured, cut, and installed all of the tile. At the end of the day, we had all of the area tiled to perfection. Again, another good clean-up. On day three he grouted all of the work he had done the day before. Again, no mess left. He returned on a fourth day to enhance and seal the tile. He said it was important to let the grout dry before sealing it. He had plenty of time left the day that he grouted it, but opted to make another trip in order to do a better job. Craig was courteous, prompt, and reliable. I think his price was fair, and he performed the job at the estimate value. His work is impeccable. I would hire him again.

Craig and his team did a great job of cutting, blocking my garage ceiling and installing an attic ladder. They also placed 320 sq ft of decking in my attic for storage space. They did all of this in one day. Craig came back the following Saturday to do drywall repairs and trim out around the opening. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. We were referred to CSS by our cabinet company, and Craig did a fantastic job on our backsplash. When we showed him our first choice of backsplash, he explained to us that the coloring might not be best suited for the look we were going for. Since this is our first remodel, we went on his advice and kept looking. He showed us various photos and steered us in the direction of a large format tile that is absolutely gorgeous with our new kitchen. There were a few issues with the installation of our countertops… we had some custom work done around the inside of a window which made installing the backsplash a challenge. Craig came up with a solution that looks great and did not require any re-work on the window trim. We are very happy with the result. The second part of the job included adding a stone façade to a half-wall and column in our kitchen. This is not something that he typically does, but given how meticulous he was in the backsplash application, we asked him to do this for us because we knew it would be done well. He spent countless hours measuring, cutting and installing what turned out to be a very tricky project. His attention to detail and pride in his workmanship definitely show in the finished product. Anyone else would’ve just installed the panels, but Craig took the time to customize the installation so there were no visible seams and to make the stone wall look more natural. He took special care not to damage anything in our new kitchen (which I can’t say for others who have done work along the way in this remodel), and he kept everything as clean as possible. At the end of each day he cleaned everything and made every effort to leave things as clean as when he arrived. Overall, I would rate Craig and CSS as the best contractor that we worked with throughout our remodeling process. I would definitely use him again for future projects and recommend him to anyone looking for high quality work for their remodel.

Craig Thompson of Custom Surface Solutions did a great job installing our kitchen backsplash. Craig was highly recommended to us from a major showplace for tiles. At the beginning of the process, we mentioned to him that we were looking for bright white tiles in a diamond pattern. Being conscientious, he quickly emailed us suggestions for specific tiles, along with an extremely helpful chart with the names, addresses, phone numbers, websites, and contact people at reputable tile stores in Austin. Once the installation started, we discovered that one of the walls was curved, although you couldn't see this structural flaw with the naked eye. Craig quickly solved the problem which resulted in a lovely backsplash. He is bright, articulate, patient, professional, and reasonable with his pricing.

Absolutely Amazing Kitchen Backsplash! Words can not describe how happy we are with Custom Surface Solutions. We were looking for a tile specialist who is able to see beyond mainstream applications and provide us with a sense of perfection and dedication to detail as if it was his own project. Our project entailed the installation of an artisan made tile with California origin and made by special order only. Our tile is made of reclaimed glass and the pattern consists of a red and orange tile design that we created. The grout is a product made of recycled glass and upon setting, displays a very subtle glittery transparency and we truly needed a "specialist" who is not only familiar with new innovations and products but also someone who has a vision for what we wanted. Craig and Karon are truly very special professionals rarely seen in the construction industry! Craig kept us up-to-date on his availability, was able to work with us- meeting our schedule needs ( !! ), and was right on with the estimated time of completion. Everything was "realistic" and honest. We feel that he is extremely knowledgeable in his specialty and he does not take shortcuts!! If it does not look good, off it comes! Craig recently installed a backsplash for our kitchen. It came out AMAZING! The tile really brings the entire house together and shows off the beautiful kitchen we have. They are very honest, industrious, and always on time. They did my kitchen floor and backsplash. We are very happy with the work. The backsplash was designed in a way that it was centered with the window and all the corners were symmetrical and the design was done exactly like I wanted done. The result is just beautiful!

Craig prepared the backsplash wall. He completely put in new sheetrock instead of just patching the old sheetrock. He was very dependable and worked consistantly the entire time he was here. The finished product was excellent. He used tiles I had purchased and had to be creative with the corner pieces. He has a good eye for design and offered suggestions when asked. His choice of grout color was perfect. I would refer his services to anyone desiring a great finished product.

CSS did a small bathroom counter project for us, but he worked as though it were the most important job he had to do. A subcontractor made a couple of errors, but Craig followed through and got everything done right. He worked hard, did more than he had to do, and did it well. He was so helpful with ideas and solutions. Further, his prices are competitive and his integrity is impeccable. We would not hesitate to use CSS again.

We have just completed a major remodeling job. Custom Surface Solutions did the tiling for several rooms as well as the backsplash. Craig and Karen did a great job! Two specific things come to mind. First, the remodeling involved extending a room and the slab levels didn't quite match. We were quite worried that this would be a problem, but Craig found the right solution. If you walk over that area right now, you would have no idea that there had ever been an issue. Second, at the end of a very long day, I noticed that Craig remained patient, laying each tile with the same care as he had laid the first ones of the day. Under those circumstances, many people would have hurried a little bit, eager to get home, but Craig use the same care for the last tiles that he did for the first. Custom Surface Solutions installed a tile back splash. The price for the job was very fair against other bids. The job was completed on time. The area in which CSS worked was kept clean over the duration of the project. VERY IMPORTANT!

I chose Craig to do my kitchen backsplash mainly because he was recommended by UB Kitchens. UB was not involved in the project and I paid Craig directly, but he has some type of relationship with them, which to me, meant he was obligated to keep two parties happy, me and UB. I also figured that he would be professional, otherwise UB wouldn't be putting their reputation on the line. I was busy with other stuff, so I wanted to have minimal involvement in the project. I could have gotten it done quite a bit cheaper, but I didn't want to have to be around while the work was done, or deal with communication problems that often result in surprises when you deal with low-cost ESL types. The job went without as much as a hiccup and the tile looks very nice. I would recommend Craig and Custom Surface Solutions to others.

We contacted CSS through our cabinet supplier only a few days prior to our target install date. Craig was willing to fit us into his schedule and even worked on Saturday afternoon to complete the project. We had already placed our order for 2x8 subway tiles in two colors with a local supplier. He let us know that he could have gotten us a discount, which we will keep in mind for the next project. He communicated well with us on the quote, confirmation of tile order, and work schedule, and alerted us in advance of changes. For our kitchen backsplash, we wanted a few tiles of the second color mixed in randomly. Craig suggested we work together to make sure we were happy with the results. I marked where the random tiles should be placed as he installed each row. After a few rows, we noticed that the edge tiles were slightly larger than the field tiles, so he had to trim those pieces to keep the horizontal lines level. We also had several outlets, a window ledge and recessed bottoms on the cabinets that needed special cuts. Craig was very patient throughout and took his time in doing a nice job. I give CSS 4.5 stars and it would be 5 except for some small things: 1) even though Craig was careful to spread drop cloths, there were a few water stains on our new floor after grouting that required some clean-up on our part, 2) due to cabinet recesses without backs, the number of trim pieces was underestimated for the ends of the backsplash (one spot was carefully pieced with a minimal grout line), and 3) an end of the window sill overhang could have been filled with a tile piece instead of heavy grout. Overall, we were very pleased with his cooperative attitude, attention to detail, professionalism and friendly personality. We look forward to working with him again. I highly recommend Craig Thompson with Custom Surface Solutions. He installed a beautiful backsplash in my kitchen. He was recommended to me by Patrice at UB Kitchens. I had chosen subway travertine tile with a band of mosaic tile for an accent. Craig suggested adding a pencil tile in matching travertine. It was a good idea. The backsplash looks great! Craig is very professional and does excellent, detailed work. I'm very happy with my new backsplash.

Craig and his assistant were fantastic they were promt, friendly and rolled with our very busy household full of kids and pets. His proposal was very reasonable and he stayed within our limited budget but still produced a bathroom that turned out fantastic better than what we ever imagined. Craigs design ideas were better than our vision. We will hire them again to remodel our kitchen and master bath when we have saved up the money. Friends of ours have already hired them for one of their projects after seeing our results.

Craig at Custom Surface Solutions did a great professional job. He asked and listened to want we wanted in our masterbath and suggested ideas that he thought would make our bath a place to truely enjoy. Craigs work and attitude was very professional and doing the job right was his top priority. Craig went out of his way to contact the manufacurer of the pedestal sink we wanted installed to confirm the proper installation(to pieces shipped did not match the installation diagrams and the manufacturer admitted that the pieces had been changed and did not fit together as shown......) I hired Custom Surface Solutions to install about 25 square feet of glass tile kitchen backsplash. PROS = took extra care to prep the walls right, no additional charge for extra install effort caused by tiles we chose (backs were concave), install went smoothly and according to schedule, install was clean and professional, pleasure to work with. CONS = none, would hire CSS again.

Craig did a wonderful job on the 150 sqft of Satillo tile he istalled for us. There was quite a bit of labor involved and it looks great. He installed it on out backyard patio and sealed it. The job was completed on time and on budget from the written contract that Craig provided. I can't wait to have him work on our next home improvement project. You will not be disappointed by having Craig work on you project.

I hired Craig Thompson (CSS-Tile) to do the following in my kitchen: Remove and replace existing laminate countertops with granite. Remove and replace existing tile backsplash with new tile backsplash. Install new sink and faucet. Enlarge the bar area. All the work was completely done beyond my expectations. Craig is a master at installing tile. His attention to detail was wonderful. He helped me in the selection of the tile, granite, sink and faucet. He was on-site when the granite was installed and made sure everything was done correctly. He built out the bar area with undermount supports that makes the bar seem to float with no obtrusive corbels. This was something I was unaware could be done and I know took longer to install than traditional supports. I'm grateful that he came up with that option. The project was completed on time and I'm extememly happy with the results.
