We made material and design choices to allow this small space to feel and function at its best. The materials are inline with the nature loving family and the finishes allow the small space to feel light and bright. Wall mounted vanity gives more open feel and room for scale, trash or roaming cat… integrated Kohler “locker” storage in the shower and the hotel style towel rack maximize the storage where you need it!

When I purchased this floating home from my aunt and uncle, I didn’t know about floats and stringers and other issues specific to floating homes. Nor had I really thought about the hassle of an out of state remodel. Believing that I was up for the challenge, I grabbed my water wings, sketchpad, and measuring tape and jumped right in! This 5400 sf home features many unique features. Interior barn doors, reclaimed spruce hardwood floors and reclaimed hardware from old barns give this home a unique look. It has a fully finished basement, double sided fireplace in the master suite, custom fabricated lighting, marble flooring, custom made vanity from reclaimed barn wood and a very unique grow wall! There's even pieces of boat set into the walls.

The owner’s desire was for a home blending Asian design characteristics with Southwestern architecture, developed within a small building envelope with significant building height limitations as dictated by local zoning. Even though the size of the property was 20 acres, the steep, tree covered terrain made for challenging site conditions, as the owner wished to preserve as many trees as possible while also capturing key views. For the solution we first turned to vernacular Chinese villages as a prototype, specifically their varying pitched roofed buildings clustered about a central town square. We translated that to an entry courtyard opened to the south surrounded by a U-shaped, pitched roof house that merges with the topography. We then incorporated traditional Japanese folk house design detailing, particularly the tradition of hand crafted wood joinery. The result is a home reflecting the desires and heritage of the owners while at the same time respecting the historical architectural character of the local region.
