This 1950's kitchen hindered our client's cooking and bi-weekly entertaining and was inconsistent with the home's mid-century architecture. Additional key goals were to improve function for cooking and entertaining 6 to 12 people on a regular basis. Originally with only two entry points to the kitchen (from the entry/foyer and from the dining room) the kitchen wasn’t very open to the remainder of the home, or the living room at all. The door to the carport was never used and created a conflict with seating in the breakfast area. The new plans created larger openings to both rooms, and a third entry point directly into the living room. The “peninsula” manages the sight line between the kitchen and a large, brick fireplace while still creating an “island” effect in the kitchen and allowing seating on both sides. The television was also a “must have” utilizing it to watch cooking shows while prepping food, for news while getting ready for the day, and for background when entertaining. Meticulously designed cabinets provide ample storage and ergonomically friendly appliance placement. Cabinets were previously laid out into two L-shaped spaces. On the “top” was the cooking area with a narrow pantry (read: scarce storage) and a water heater in the corner. On the “bottom” was a single 36” refrigerator/freezer, and sink. A peninsula separated the kitchen and breakfast room, truncating the entire space. We have now a clearly defined cool storage space spanning 60” width (over 150% more storage) and have separated the ovens and cooking surface to spread out prep/clean zones. True pantry storage was added, and a massive “peninsula” keeps seating for up to 6 comfortably, while still expanding the kitchen and gaining storage. The newly designed, oversized peninsula provides plentiful space for prepping and entertaining. Walnut paneling wraps the room making the kitchen a stunning showpiece.

The stainless steel banding at the top drawers came as an answer to the messes and water spills often found on drawers closest to the work surface. Stainless seemed a practical solution while keeping the remaining areas in wood.

For this vacation home, a complete gut job was needed in order to fit the lifestyle and needs of this young family of four and their guests. The narrow floor plan created unique challenges, but we maximized its full potential. The result was a warm but modern design with plenty of storage and seating. One of the biggest challenges was making sure everyone had a place to sit in the kitchen. The space between the kitchen and staircase was limiting, but with sleek modern chairs that tuck away, we were able to allow for traffic patterns and seat all of the children. To accommodate any vacation extras, an extra wide space near the kitchen and bathroom was transformed into additional shelving. We installed floor-to-ceiling cabinets that offer plenty of space for everyone’s belongings. A clean design was a must, so we opted for a more modern look. We used Benjamin Moore's "Simply White" as the foundation, putting it on the walls and cabinets, and coordinating the countertops and backsplash. To make the home more welcoming, we used natural wood on the island and floating shelves. The wood was coordinated with the floor, creating a cohesive interior. Una cocina pequeña pero con personalidad. Al tratarse de un piso a ser usado esporádicamente por vacaciones, nos permite ser más atrevidos con colores y padrones para alegrar nuestra vida. Creamos un ambiente de cocina mediterránea inspirada en los antiguos padrones hidráulicos del suelo. En realidad, este elemento es ideal para cocinas pequeñas ya que nos da una sensación de que sea más amplia. Para no cargar visualmente hemos optado por armarios superiores en blanco. En el concepto de casa de playa, hemos elegido las puertas inferiores de madera clara para añadir calidez al espacio. This beautiful contemporary kitchen was designed by Mariah from our Nashua, NH showroom. The design features a full-access slab door cabinet with granite & quartz countertops, an island with a waterfall countertop edge, an induction cooktop with a built-in ceiling vent, and an existing 10ft. window behind the sink. The original kitchen did not use the entire space, which was a main focus during the design process. Pushing the sink against the wall allowed for a bigger island and more space to move around within the kitchen. The homeowners originally wanted concrete countertops, but in the end decided on a more durable granite countertop that looked just like concrete! Special features in this kitchen include two mixer lift cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, a spice rack, double trash, roll out trays and floating shelves above the countertop. Mariah also designed a laundry room cabinetry unit, featuring JSI Designer Cabinetry & a butcher block top, and an entertainment center in this home.
