While this new home had an architecturally striking exterior, the home’s interior fell short in terms of true functionality and overall style. The most critical element in this renovation was the kitchen and dining area, which needed careful attention to bring it to the level that suited the home and the homeowners. As a graduate of Culinary Institute of America, our client wanted a kitchen that “feels like a restaurant, with the warmth of a home kitchen,” where guests can gather over great food, great wine, and truly feel comfortable in the open concept home. Although it follows a typical chef’s galley layout, the unique design solutions and unusual materials set it apart from the typical kitchen design. Polished countertops, laminated and stainless cabinets fronts, and professional appliances are complemented by the introduction of wood, glass, and blackened metal – materials introduced in the overall design of the house. Unique features include a wall clad in walnut for dangling heavy pots and utensils; a floating, sculptural walnut countertop piece housing an herb garden; an open pantry that serves as a coffee bar and wine station; and a hanging chalkboard that hides a water heater closet and features different coffee offerings available to guests. The dining area addition, enclosed by windows, continues to vivify the organic elements and brings in ample natural light, enhancing the darker finishes and creating additional warmth. Because this home is on one storey and is flooded with light, we wanted to reflect this in the choice of design we chose for the walls - in this case a light and airy bespoke wallpaper. We complimented this with some simple Oak furniture with the curved design which will be replicated within the rest of the property.

Snohomish Remodel

Our Seattle studio designed this stunning 5,000+ square foot Snohomish home to make it comfortable and fun for a wonderful family of six. On the main level, our clients wanted a mudroom. So we removed an unused hall closet and converted the large full bathroom into a powder room. This allowed for a nice landing space off the garage entrance. We also decided to close off the formal dining room and convert it into a hidden butler's pantry. In the beautiful kitchen, we created a bright, airy, lively vibe with beautiful tones of blue, white, and wood. Elegant backsplash tiles, stunning lighting, and sleek countertops complete the lively atmosphere in this kitchen. On the second level, we created stunning bedrooms for each member of the family. In the primary bedroom, we used neutral grasscloth wallpaper that adds texture, warmth, and a bit of sophistication to the space creating a relaxing retreat for the couple. We used rustic wood shiplap and deep navy tones to define the boys' rooms, while soft pinks, peaches, and purples were used to make a pretty, idyllic little girls' room. In the basement, we added a large entertainment area with a show-stopping wet bar, a large plush sectional, and beautifully painted built-ins. We also managed to squeeze in an additional bedroom and a full bathroom to create the perfect retreat for overnight guests. For the decor, we blended in some farmhouse elements to feel connected to the beautiful Snohomish landscape. We achieved this by using a muted earth-tone color palette, warm wood tones, and modern elements. The home is reminiscent of its spectacular views – tones of blue in the kitchen, primary bathroom, boys' rooms, and basement; eucalyptus green in the kids' flex space; and accents of browns and rust throughout. ---Project designed by interior design studio Kimberlee Marie Interiors. Posh Home Remodel

Everything Home

Our Carmel design-build studio was tasked with organizing our client’s basement and main floor to improve functionality and create spaces for entertaining. In the basement, the goal was to include a simple dry bar, theater area, mingling or lounge area, playroom, and gym space with the vibe of a swanky lounge with a moody color scheme. In the large theater area, a U-shaped sectional with a sofa table and bar stools with a deep blue, gold, white, and wood theme create a sophisticated appeal. The addition of a perpendicular wall for the new bar created a nook for a long banquette. With a couple of elegant cocktail tables and chairs, it demarcates the lounge area. Sliding metal doors, chunky picture ledges, architectural accent walls, and artsy wall sconces add a pop of fun. On the main floor, a unique feature fireplace creates architectural interest. The traditional painted surround was removed, and dark large format tile was added to the entire chase, as well as rustic iron brackets and wood mantel. The moldings behind the TV console create a dramatic dimensional feature, and a built-in bench along the back window adds extra seating and offers storage space to tuck away the toys. In the office, a beautiful feature wall was installed to balance the built-ins on the other side. 廊下をデコレーションしてみよう！

窓もなく、ただまっすぐ伸びる廊下はどことなく殺風景。そこで、お気に入りの写真や絵画、アートを飾って、ギャラリーのように廊下をおしゃれに仕立ててみましょう。賃貸などで壁に穴をあけられなければ、額に入れた作品を床に置き、壁に立てかけておくのもおすすめ。また、廊下の角や玄関ホールなど、邪魔にならないところにスツールを置いて観葉植物や花瓶を置くのもいいですね。スペースが取れるようであれば、廊下に机やいすを置いて書斎のような使い方にするのもいいでしょう。いずれにせよ、廊下に物を置くようであれば、特に夜、足をひっかけないよう、足元灯の設置は必須です。

廊下と玄関ホールのバリアフリー

家族の介護が必要となったときに、一番に考えるのは廊下や玄関ホールなど家のバリアフリー化でしょう。廊下はリビングやダイニングほど施工費用をかけていませんし、明るさも広さも新築時にはあまり重要視されていないことが多いですが、暗くて狭い廊下では高齢者の転倒事故が起こりやすく、危険な環境になっている家も多いのです。バリアフリーのリフォームを施すことで、部屋と廊下の境となる敷居などの段差をなくし、手すりをつけ、窓からの採光や、照明・足元灯で明るくし、広さを確保することなどが叶えられます。手すりであれば簡単に取り付けやすそうと思われがちですが、使う人の背の高さに合わせなければ補助にならなかったり、手を滑らせる原因となりますし、取り付けが甘いと体重をかけたときに大変危険です。専門家に相談しましょう。また、お住まいの地域によっては行政からバリアフリー化工事のための補助金制度があるので、調べてみるといいでしょう。
