The owners needed more bedroom space for family and friends but couldn’t figure out how to create additional bedrooms. With space for only the master bedroom on the main floor, the other bedrooms would have to be in the basement. The basement was limited and the small windows were not to code for emergency exit from a bedroom. Including the additional space under the new sunroom addition, Jim was able to optimize the usefulness of the lower level, designing a layout with not only three bedrooms and and large family room space, but also an office and an abundance of storage. They now have even more storage room at the cottage than in their larger home! The basement windows were enlarged significantly to exceed code requirements and new windows were added in the family room area and to bring in significantly more light. The overall total of four bedrooms and three bathrooms provide comfortable accommodations for the entire family.

The Living Room required storage for books and tech components. These West Elm bookcases, TV stand, and glass-top side table can be easily moved for use in other, future spaces. Favorite: The Blue Dot coffee table... ash-blue metal frame with a walnut top.

This small bedroom became a family room/den. The walls were covered in a vinyl grass cloth wall covering to warm the space. The gray and camel color scheme echos the silver and gold wall sculptures over the sofa.

his spacious living room in Menai was given the star treatment with our Total Makeover package. My clients had more than one living room but this is where they spend most of their time and they wanted this space to feel calm and relaxing and make the most of the views out to the family’s pool. A solution was needed for the orange tones of the existing exposed brick walls, which had a dominating effect on the room. A refreshing colour palette of greys, greens, and shades of blue was introduced and cooled down the overly warm feeling and to make the most of the brickwork without having to paint it or cover it over. An oversized custom-made rug in a textured mid-grey was the perfect tool to disguise flooring that wasn’t to the clients’ taste (but wasn’t in the scope of works to replace!). It looked great, helped meet the brief and stayed within budget. Blonde timber furniture and homewares including a coffee table, side table and floor lamp were great neutral options and helped the cool colours of blue and green really pop. This room receives an abundance of natural light and the ability to control that light was a key consideration for my clients.
