Externally the entire house needed dragging into the 21st century. The mock Tudor features felt very dated, despite being a staple of the estate. The odd roof shapes were rationalised and chamfered bay windows squared off. We applied a fresh render with dark timber cladding to give a cleaner more modern appearance.

We were asked by our client to investigate options for reconfiguring and substantially enlarging their one and a half storey bungalow in Whitecraigs Conservation Area. The clients love where they live but not the convoluted layout and size of their house. The existing house has a cellular layout measuring 210m2, and the clients were looking to more than double the size of their home to both enhance the accommodation footprint but also the various additional spaces. The client’s ultimate aim was to create a home suited to their current lifestyle with open plan living spaces and a better connection to their garden grounds. With the house being located within a conservation area, demolition of the existing house was neither an option nor an ecofriendly solution. Our design for the new house therefore consists of a sensitive blend of contemporary design and traditional forms, proportions and materials to create a fully remodelled and modernised substantially enlarged contemporary home measuring 475m2. We are pleased that our design was not only well received by our clients, but also the local planning authority which recently issued planning consent for this new 3 storey home.

Closeup view of the Red Copper cleansing strips installed to minimize the growth of algae and moss in this heavily treed and moisture-prone shoreline location. From 2020 to 2021, the historic Legacy Theatre in Stony Creek was renovated extensively and we were selected to install a flat TPO roof as well as an architectural asphalt gable roof. We specified CertainTeed Landmark Pro asphalt shingles in Granite Gray for the gable roof and Johns Manville .080 TPO for the flat roof. Both of these were installed over 4" polyisocyanurate insulation. We recommended this style of architectural asphalt shingles to map to the historic look of the buildings of this era; the flat TPO roof provides good heating and cooling efficiency and is indiscernible from the ground, so as not to take away from the aesthetic appeal of the gable roof.

The project to refurbish and extend this mid-terrace Victorian house in Peckham began in late 2021. We were approached by a client with a clear brief of not only extending to meet the space requirements of a young family but also with a strong sense of aesthetics and quality of interior spaces that they wanted to achieve. An exterior design was arrived at through a careful study of precedents within the area. An emphasis was placed on blending in and remaining subservient to the existing built environment through materiality that blends harmoniously with its surroundings. Internally, we are working to the clients brief of creating a timeless yet unmistakably contemporary and functional interior. The aim is to utilise the orientation of the property for natural daylight, introduce clever storage solutions and use materials that will age gracefully and provide the perfect backdrop for living. The Planning Permission has been granted in spring 2022 with the work set to commence on site later in the year.
