BeachHaus is built on a previously developed site on Siesta Key. It sits directly on the bay but has Gulf views from the upper floor and roof deck. The client loved the old Florida cracker beach houses that are harder and harder to find these days. They loved the exposed roof joists, ship lap ceilings, light colored surfaces and inviting and durable materials. Given the risk of hurricanes, building those homes in these areas is not only disingenuous it is impossible. Instead, we focused on building the new era of beach houses; fully elevated to comfy with FEMA requirements, exposed concrete beams, long eaves to shade windows, coralina stone cladding, ship lap ceilings, and white oak and terrazzo flooring. Birchwood Construction had the pleasure of working with Jonathan Lee Architects to revitalize this beautiful waterfront cottage. Located in the historic Belvedere Club community, the home's exterior design pays homage to its original 1800s grand Southern style. To honor the iconic look of this era, Birchwood craftsmen cut and shaped custom rafter tails and an elegant, custom-made, screen door. The home is framed by a wraparound front porch providing incomparable Lake Charlevoix views. The interior is embellished with unique flat matte-finished countertops in the kitchen. The raw look complements and contrasts with the high gloss grey tile backsplash. Custom wood paneling captures the cottage feel throughout the rest of the home. Located on the shoreline of Chichester and Langstone Harbours, a short walk from Emsworth, this two bedroom Deckhouse is a novel yet practical design dating from the 1960's. It is part of a unique development of deckhouses that were originally built as yachtsmen's weekend and holiday houses. The deckhouses are set in a tranquil parkland setting that contains two natural ponds. The Sussex Border Path passes beside as it follows the contours of Chichester Harbour and Thorney Island. The alterations included the installation of a new kitchen; the changes are sympathetic to the property.

Beautifully milled oak weatherboards were loving laid with bevel joins to give the distinct profile of quality carpentry to the corners. The double garage was laid with wide wood boards on the diagonal to create a great rompus room in this compact 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house. We laid the boards on the diagonal to open up the narrow spaces.

The site is positioned high on Burleigh Headland, adjacent to the National Park where the strong environmental context of the siting has generated a design response that allows the occupants to connect with its natural setting with internal views into the tree canopies & North across the Ocean to the Gold Coast skyline. The building form has been broken down into two pavilion like forms to allow outdoor spaces on the upper level living zones & again celebrate the outdoor sub-tropical climate of the site & allow light & cooling sea breezes to penetrate. The detailing of the building is in its local vernacular of lightweight, beach house timber dwellings with fine timber & batten qualities evident in original 1940’s houses of the area & reinterprets it into a contemporary beach house
