Our client has a wonderful 1940's home in South Minneapolis. While the home has lots of charm, the tiny main level bathroom was in need of a remodel. We removed the tub/shower and created a curb-less shower to remove as many visual barriers as possible. We created a custom vanity that was more shallow than average in order to maximize the walking space within the bathroom. A simple glass panel from floor to ceiling keeps the water in the shower. The tile backsplash from the vanity area runs all the way around the bathroom as an added detail and also allowed us to have protection from the water at the vanity without taking up precious countertop space. Hawthorne Hills Residence

In 1949, one of mid-century modern’s most famous NW architects, Paul Hayden Kirk, built this early “glass house” in Hawthorne Hills. Rather than flattening the rolling hills of the Northwest to accommodate his structures, Kirk sought to make the least impact possible on the building site by making use of it natural landscape. When we started this project, our goal was to pay attention to the original architecture--as well as designing the home around the client’s eclectic art collection and African artifacts. The home was completely gutted, since most of the home is glass, hardly any exterior walls remained. We kept the basic footprint of the home the same—opening the space between the kitchen and living room. The horizontal grain matched walnut cabinets creates a natural continuous movement. The sleek lines of the Fleetwood windows surrounding the home allow for the landscape and interior to seamlessly intertwine. In our effort to preserve as much of the design as possible, the original fireplace remains in the home and we made sure to work with the natural lines originally designed by Kirk.

Gestalterisch sollte es ein Einfaches, vom Innen - und Außenausdruck her, ein warmes und robustes Gebäude mit Wohlfühlatmosphäre und großzügiger Raumwirkung sein. Es wurden "Raum- Einbauten" in das Erdgeschoss frei eingestellt , welche nicht raumhoch ausgebildet sind, um die Großzügigkeit des Erdgeschosses zu erhalten und um reizvolle Zonierungen und Blickbezüge im Innenraum zu erhalten. Diese unterscheiden sich in der Textur und in Materialität. Ein Holzwürfel wird zu Küche, Speise und Garderobe, eine Stahlbetonklammer nimmt ein bestehendes Küchenmöbel und einen Holzofen auf. Zusammen mit dem Küchenblock "schwimmen" diese Einbauten auf einem durchgehenden, grauen Natursteinboden und binden diese harmonisch und optisch zusammen. Zusammengefasst ein ökonomisches Raumkonzept mit großzügiger und ausgefallener Raumwirkung. Das zweigeschossige Einfamilienhaus mit Flachdach ist eine klassische innerstädtische Nachverdichtung. Die beengte Grundstückssituation, der Geländeverlauf mit dem ansteigenden Hang auf der Westseite, die starke Einsichtnahme durch eine Geschosswohnbebauung im Süden, die dicht befahrene Straße im Osten und das knappe Budget waren große Herausforderungen des Entwurfs. Im Erdgeschoss liegen die Küche mit Ess- und Wohnbereich, sowie einige Nebenräume und der Eingangsbereich. Im Obergeschoss sind die Individualräume mit zwei Badezimmern untergebracht. La nouvelle salle de bain principale a été conçue à l'ancien emplacement de la cuisine. L'espace contient une douche à l'italienne sans porte (avec une niche pour les produits), un plan vasque en Corian blanc avec un meuble suspendu en placage de chêne, des toilettes suspendus et une buanderie séparée de l'espace salle d'eau par un porte en verre sablé. Le garde manger a été utilisé comme meuble en deux parties: au dessus pour rangement simple, en dessous un tiroir pour le linge sale et le linge à repasser. Les façades ont été carrelées. バスルーム (浴槽なし)リフォームの技法には大きく分けて「在来工法」と「ユニットバス (システムバス)」の2通りがあります。

在来工法：「在来工法」とは、壁、床、窓枠、浴槽などを実際の現場で左官、大工、タイル職人等が作り上げていく技法で、バスルーム (浴槽なし)の大きさや形に合わせて自由にレイアウトをデザインできたり、趣のあるタイルで壁を演出することができたりといった点が利点と言えます。昔ながらのこの技法には、費用が高い、工期が長い、年数が経つと水漏れの心配がある、などの注意点があります。
ユニットバス（システムバス）：比較的新しいこの技法は、予め工場で生産されたパーツ (壁、バスタブ、シャワーユニットなど) を現場で組み立てていく技法で、防水性、断熱性に優れ、工期を短縮できるだけでなく、費用も大幅に抑えることができます。在来工法と比べると、デザインやレイアウトの自由度が低い点が欠点としてあげられます。

ホテルライクなバスルームに誰しもが憧れたことがあるでしょう。すっきりとした収納、余計なものやプライベート感がない、トイレとバスが一緒の三点ユニットでも清潔感があるのがホテルのバスルームの特徴です。このようなシンプルな印象のバスルームにするコツは、収納をできるかぎり1カ所にまとめるということです。タオルや着替え、トイレットペーパーや洗剤など溢れがち (しかもバスルームに置きがち) な日用品のストックは、必要分だけをコンパクトに整理して、同素材や同系色の収納ボックスやラックにまとめることで、全体を統一感ある印象に見せます。ところで、このようなホテルライクなバスルームはアメリカのバスルームが元になっていますが、アメリカの Houzz サイトの特集記事 (Story) には、“Bathroom 1 1/2” や “Bathroom 3/4” などと表記されているものがあります。これは、バスルームを「バスタブ」、「シャワー」、「トイレ」、「洗面台」の4つ分けて、それぞれ 1/4 と考え、4つすべてある場合は ”Bathroom 1”、それに加えてトイレと洗面台がもう1カ所ずつある場合は “Bathroom 1 1/2”、シャワー、トイレ、洗面台だけでバスタブがない場合は “Bathroom 3/4” のように表現されます。
