Art Deco Bathroom

In keeping with the age of the house, circa 1920, an art deco inspired bathroom was installed in classic black and white. Brass and black fixtures add warmth, as does the metallic ceiling. Reeded glass accents are another nod to the era, as is the hex marble floor. A custom bench and niche were installed, working around the old bones of the house. A new window was installed, widening the view, but high enough to provide privacy. Board and batten provide interest and texture to the bold black walls.

The client for this bath requested that Perianth create a sleek and chic hotel feel for his Upper West Side condo. The concept for the bath as a whole was to create an escape; the concept for the shower itself was to create an enveloping mood that surrounded you from floor to ceiling. By bringing the lighter tiles into the corners, the black tiles in the shower were defined. Whimsical and reasonably priced artwork helps to make it light, fun and still sophisticated. This modern primary bathroom in black and white is a materiality wonderland. Three different tiles were used in the space. White and gray marble flooring, black and white marble wall tiles and a small picket black porcelain tile for the curved wall. All the above is accented with black and white everywhere you look. The key to this bathroom is the use of tile to delineate space. The curved wall around the tub required something that could be installed along the shape of the wall. As an accent, the same tile was used to enhance both the toilet and the two vanity areas. Materials of walnut and high gloss blacks interchange as they bring in vibes from the entire home surrounding this one space. A design and renovation that truly changed the feel, usage and quality of this primary bathroom.

This gem of a home was designed by homeowner/architect Eric Vollmer. It is nestled in a traditional neighborhood with a deep yard and views to the east and west. Strategic window placement captures light and frames views while providing privacy from the next door neighbors. The second floor maximizes the volumes created by the roofline in vaulted spaces and loft areas. Four skylights illuminate the ‘Nordic Modern’ finishes and bring daylight deep into the house and the stairwell with interior openings that frame connections between the spaces. The skylights are also operable with remote controls and blinds to control heat, light and air supply. Unique details abound! Metal details in the railings and door jambs, a paneled door flush in a paneled wall, flared openings. Floating shelves and flush transitions. The main bathroom has a ‘wet room’ with the tub tucked under a skylight enclosed with the shower. This is a Structural Insulated Panel home with closed cell foam insulation in the roof cavity. The on-demand water heater does double duty providing hot water as well as heat to the home via a high velocity duct and HRV system. The client’s original bathroom was tidy but needed an upgrade and, “a spa like retreat,” were the words they used to describe their dream bathroom. The starting point -- striking floor to ceiling marble tile in clean white with charcoal accents. The marble adorns the shower floors, sides and ceiling as well as the main bathroom floor, tub surround and step. A full height contrasting charcoal glass backsplash behind the vanity and mirror adds depth and class to this spacious sanctuary, plus it’s smooth, glossy finish is as strong as any natural stone and is resistant to scratches. The shower boasts a convenient built in shower locker, an easy slide adjustable shower head, sleek and modern stainless steel linear floor drains and a frameless glass shower door for a seamless finish. The vanity is complete with his and hers sinks, new modern fixtures and the finishing touch, a dual flush energy efficient toilet.

浴室リフォームの技法には大きく分けて「在来工法」と「ユニットバス (システムバス)」の2通りがあります。

在来工法：「在来工法」とは、壁、床、窓枠、浴槽などを実際の現場で左官、大工、タイル職人等が作り上げていく技法で、浴室の大きさや形に合わせて自由にレイアウトをデザインできたり、趣のあるタイルで壁を演出することができたりといった点が利点と言えます。昔ながらのこの技法には、費用が高い、工期が長い、年数が経つと水漏れの心配がある、などの注意点があります。
ユニットバス（システムバス）：比較的新しいこの技法は、予め工場で生産されたパーツ (壁、バスタブ、シャワーユニットなど) を現場で組み立てていく技法で、防水性、断熱性に優れ、工期を短縮できるだけでなく、費用も大幅に抑えることができます。在来工法と比べると、デザインやレイアウトの自由度が低い点が欠点としてあげられます。

浴室にプラスアルファでお風呂タイムをもっと楽しく

介護が必要な方には、浴室に浴槽手すりやシャワーチェア、すべり止めマットなどの安全グッズを使って、癒やしの時間を安全にゆっくりと楽しんでもらいましょう。浴室に床暖房を取り入れると、冬場のあのヒンヤリ感がなくなり、ヒートショックの防止に効果が期待できます。大粒のお湯が頭上から降り注ぐように全身を包み込むレインシャワー水栓は、効率的に身体を温めてくれます。また最近では、浴室テレビを装備して、あたたかいお湯に浸かりながらテレビ番組や映画を楽しむ方も増えています。ライフスタイルにあわせて、浴室をカスタマイズしてみてはいかがでしょうか？

ホテルライクなバスルームに誰しもが憧れたことがあるでしょう。すっきりとした収納、余計なものやプライベート感がない、トイレとバスが一緒の三点ユニットでも清潔感があるのがホテルのバスルームの特徴です。このようなシンプルな印象のバスルームにするコツは、収納をできるかぎり1カ所にまとめるということです。タオルや着替え、トイレットペーパーや洗剤など溢れがち (しかもバスルームに置きがち) な日用品のストックは、必要分だけをコンパクトに整理して、同素材や同系色の収納ボックスやラックにまとめることで、全体を統一感ある印象に見せます。ところで、このようなホテルライクなバスルームはアメリカのバスルームが元になっていますが、アメリカの Houzz サイトの特集記事 (Story) には、“Bathroom 1 1/2” や “Bathroom 3/4” などと表記されているものがあります。これは、バスルームを「バスタブ」、「シャワー」、「トイレ」、「洗面台」の4つ分けて、それぞれ 1/4 と考え、4つすべてある場合は ”Bathroom 1”、それに加えてトイレと洗面台がもう1カ所ずつある場合は “Bathroom 1 1/2”、シャワー、トイレ、洗面台だけでバスタブがない場合は “Bathroom 3/4” のように表現されます。
