A good mattress is essential for a comfortable bedroom; here are 6 types that you should know about

A mattress is not a visible part of your bedroom’s character, but it’s an important aspect, nonetheless. A mattress that suits us plays an important role in helping us get a good night’s sleep and, subsequently, maintaining our well being, both physical and mental. Unlike some years ago in India, today mattresses are available with various options. But the more choices there are, the trickier is the decision. Criteria such as the support system of the mattress, infill material used, the comfort level as per individual needs, the size of the bed and your budget should be considered before you commit your back (and bucks) to one. Read on.
1. Innerspring mattress
An innerspring mattress is a popular choice because it ensures good comfort, support, bounciness, is affordable and has been around for decades. Its support framework is constructed with a series of connected springs that are attached to a thick wire that runs along the periphery of the mattress. The strength of the mattress is directly proportional to the number of springs used and the spring’s gauge. These mattresses are usually finished with a thick layer of quilting with foam and fibre that provide varying levels of softness and comfort.
The main drawbacks of an innerspring mattress are that it has limited durability, the metal springs can be noisy while tossing and turning, and it is prone to wearing and sagging (especially if your kids love jumping on the mattress).

2. Pocket coil mattress
A pocket coil mattress is the sophisticated and expensive version of a spring mattress. In this mattress the springs are not interconnected to each other like in an innerspring mattress, but are individually wrapped within a fabric encasement. As a result, a pocket coil mattress has the bounciness of a spring mattress and at the same time causes minimum disturbance to the surrounding spring coils when turning over while sleeping.
The main drawback is that some pocket coils may get subjected to more pressure due to body weight and will wear out faster in comparison to other coils.

3. Memory foam mattress
Memory foam is also known as viscoelastic foam; this mattress contours as per the body shape and then slowly returns to its original shape after the pressure or weight is released. It absorbs any kind of movement caused by the body without affecting the other parts of the mattress. Also, some brands build in resistance to mould, bacteria, bed bugs and dust mites. However, memory foam mattresses are more expensive in comparison to the other mattress types.
Note: Some users do not like memory foam because the mattress is responsive to temperature; the mattress might have the tendency to get overheated due to the body heat that can result in hot and sweaty nights.
A recent innovation: Consider a gel-infused memory foam mattress. The gel layer enables adequate air circulation and makes the mattress feel cooler.

4. Latex foam mattress
Latex mattresses are made from natural or synthetic rubber. These mattresses offer comfort, have high durability and are good at absorbing any kind of movement caused during sleeping. A latex mattress contours according to the body shape and instantly regains its original shape due to its natural elasticity. Unlike memory foam, a latex mattress is breathable, which helps reduce any kind of heat build-up within the mattress.

5. Hybrid mattress
A hybrid mattress is a combination of two materials: it combines the bounciness of a pocket-spring mattress and the comfort of memory foam. The pocket-spring technology reduces the motion transfer that occurs with tossing and turning, while the multiple layers of memory foam help achieve a comfortable sleeping posture.

6. Rubberised coir mattress
How about going for a natural organic mattress? Consider rubberised coir mattresses that are manufactured by processing natural coconut coir fibre with a solution of latex. Rubberised coir allows good air circulation and is believed to be resistant to the breeding of bacteria, fungi and any kind of dust mites. This mattress provides an extra-firm base in comparison to the other types of mattresses.
