House at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple with seven children
Location: Tucson, Arizona
Size: Eight bedrooms
Designers: Architect Kevin B. Howard Architects and designer Douglas Marsceill
Builder: Desert West Construction
A young professional couple with seven children wanted a modern home with lots of room, ample solar power and plenty of glass to take advantage of its spectacular desert location, so they brought in architect Kevin Howard to make their dream a reality.
When Howard first saw the site for this new house, he was agog. Located at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains and on the north property line of the Coronado National Forest, “this site is Arizona’s equivalent of beachfront property,” he says. A giant arroyo runs through the site, where workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps built rock damns in the 1930s. Howard and his team designed a home that bridges the arroyo. The entry steps move up the hillside to meet the main level that bridges the arroyo below.

The roof has 72 solar PV panels that provide ample energy to the house. “The first full month of solar PV production showed 115 percent above the original estimated amounts,” Howard says, “due to the slope of the roof being optimized for spring and summer solar orientation.”
The exterior is composed of three main materials. Glass walls bring in light and views. Split-face block, masonry infused with the color of the site’s soil, anchors the house and is juxtaposed with what Howard calls “a calligraphy of metal accents.”
Reflective metal panels adorn the side of the front entry. Douglas fir was used on the ceiling “to soften the metal and bring in an organic element,” Howard says. The Egyptian limestone for the entry floor came from the same quarry that was used for stone to build the pyramids. The massive, pivoting front door is made of mesquite wood and steel.
The entry opens into a double-height great room designed to bring in large-scale views of the desert. The high ceilings are Douglas fir stained a soft gray. The wood dampens the acoustics in the cathedral-like spaces — especially when seven children are at play — and warms up the steel and glass. Howard brought the exterior’s split-face block inside along with an industrial metal armature for the glass to blur the boundaries between inside and out. Above the gas fireplace are panels of rusted steel.
The living space opens into the kitchen. Poliform cabinets are flush with the wall and house appliances and storage. The deck off the kitchen is just one of many outdoor spaces. The portion of the island visible here houses more appliances and has a Caesarstone top.

The massive dark oak portion of the island seats all seven kids and their parents. The island is 12 feet long and 8 feet wide — ideal for homework and project nights. “This is the Ferrari of kitchens,” Howard says, “designed to function seamlessly for this large family.”
The formal dining room lies inside the front entry on the opposite side of the room. The recessed space is lined with grass cloth to create a muted, textural backdrop for the artwork. The dining table is from B&B Italia.
In the master bedroom, clerestories provide privacy while bringing in light and views. The concrete fireplace surround is framed with more of the block material found on the exterior.
On the house’s lower level is the family gathering space for movie and game nights. A smaller version of the upstairs kitchen and island with Polyform cabinets provides plenty of preparation, cooking and eating space. Constructed with sturdy materials, the stunning home “is an indestructible house for a family with seven kids,” Howard says.
