This beautiful, almost mid century looking wine room utilizes a 1 ton fully ducted wine guardian cooling system. Vintage Cellars made sure to oversize this cooling unit in this particular wine storage space due to the large glass doors the client wished to incorporate into the space. What a showpiece wine room this space is! This space also had custom stonework built into which the wine racking was placed. The accentuated lighting adds that extra kick to this walk in wine cellar. This warm and inviting residence, designed in the California Wine Country farmhouse vernacular, for which the architectural firm is known, features an underground wine cellar with adjoining tasting room. The home’s expansive, central great room opens to the outdoors with two large lift-n-slide doors: one opening to a large screen porch with its spectacular view, the other to a cozy flagstone patio with fireplace. Lift-n-slide doors are also found in the master bedroom, the main house’s guest room, the guest house and the pool house. A number of materials were chosen to lend an old farm house ambience: corrugated steel roofing, rustic stonework, long, wide flooring planks made from recycled hickory, and the home’s color palette itself.

The project is new construction, The clients were drawn to O’Brien Harris’-stained finishes bringing natural and approachable elements inside. They have a large and growing family that entertains frequently. Their home features floor to ceiling windows with a focus on nature, and a sliding panel wall that opens off the great room/kitchen enlarging their entertaining space by incorporating the outdoor space. The spaces have a more modern aesthetic and are light and bright with plenty of natural light. Amy Storm and Co. was brought in after cabinetry design. ワインの保存に適した環境とは？

ワインの本場であるヨーロッパでは、地下に「カーヴ」と呼ばれる貯蔵庫を設置し、そこでワインを保存して熟成させます。つまり、カーヴはワインを保存・熟成させるための理想的な環境であり、具体的には

温度は15℃くらいで常に一定

湿度は70％くらいの高め

日光や蛍光灯の光が当たらない

ワインボトルは横に寝かせた状態で動かない

においがこもらない

といった条件が挙げられます。それに比べて、温度差も湿度差も大きい日本の気候は、残念ながらワインの保存には適しているとは言えません。特に、近年のように真夏日・猛暑日が続くような環境にワインを置いておくと、変質して香りが損なわれてしまいます。

ワインセラーと冷蔵庫の違い

暑さがワインの大敵なら、家庭の冷蔵庫にワインを保存するのはどうでしょう？冷蔵庫にはさまざまな食品が保存されており、毎日何度も開け閉めされ、そのたびに振動します。また、ワインにとっては温度が低すぎるために熟成が進まず、また湿度が低すぎてコルク栓が乾燥してしまいます。したがって、冷蔵庫はワイン保存の条件を満たしておらず、ワインの長期保存には向いていません。一方、ワインセラーはワインの保存に特化しているので、他の食品の匂いが移る心配もありませんし、温度や湿度もワインに最適な設定で保存することができます。

ワインセラーの選び方

最近は自宅で使える小型の家庭用ワインセラーも種類がいろいろあり、選択肢が増えてきました。ワインセラーは、価格や保存するワインの本数、設置スペースで決めるのが一般的ですが、製造国も考慮すべき重要なポイントです。ヨーロッパのメーカーは、ワインセラーの歴史が長く経験に裏打ちされた商品が多くて安心ですが、比較的大型で高価な製品が多いのが特徴です。日本国内メーカーの製品は、日本の住宅事情を考慮したサイズ感のものが多く、万一故障の際も修理が簡単に受けられるメリットがあります。また、最近は中国製のお手頃価格の製品も増えてきました。ワインセラーと比較されるものとして「ワインクーラー」があります。一般的に、ワインセラーとワインクーラーの違いは加湿機能があるかどうかで、湿度調整もできるものがワインセラー、温度調整に特化したものがワインクーラーですが、両方とも「ワインセラー」と表記されることがほとんどです。加湿機能がないといっても、庫内は冷蔵庫ほど乾燥せず適度な湿度が保たれるので、デイリーワインを保存するだけならワインクーラーでも十分目的を果たせるでしょう。

ワインを楽しむスタイルは人それぞれです。デイリーワインをいつでも飲み頃の温度で楽しめるよう一時的ストックのためにワインセラーを設置したい方もいれば、高級ワインや貴重なヴィンテージワインの長期保存に使用される方もいらっしゃることでしょう。その目的によって、設置すべきワインセラーも変わってきます。自分のワインスタイルにあったワインセラーを設置したいですよね。
