The balusters and doors are painted nearly black in Railings by Farrow & Ball, adding a rich custom look to the staircase and hallway. A Century bench, wrapped in granite sheepskin, features a weightless acrylic base. What appears as art above the bench is actually an additional television for the family to enjoy. We love the board and baton detailing on the side of the staircase wall.

House hunting for the perfect home is never easy. Our recent clients decided to make the search a bit easier by enlisting the help of Sharer Design Group to help locate the best “canvas” for their new home. After narrowing down their list, our designers visited several prospective homes to determine each property’s potential for our clients’ design vision. Once the home was selected, the Sharer Design Group team began the task of turning the canvas into art. The entire home was transformed from top to bottom into a modern, updated space that met the vision and needs of our clients. The kitchen was updated using custom Sharer Cabinetry with perimeter cabinets painted a custom grey-beige color. The enlarged center island, in a contrasting dark paint color, was designed to allow for additional seating. Gray Quartz countertops, a glass subway tile backsplash and a stainless steel hood and appliances finish the cool, transitional feel of the room. The powder room features a unique custom Sharer Cabinetry floating vanity in a dark paint with a granite countertop and vessel sink. Sharer Cabinetry was also used in the laundry room to help maximize storage options, along with the addition of a large broom closet. New wood flooring and carpet was installed throughout the entire home to finish off the dramatic transformation. While finding the perfect home isn’t easy, our clients were able to create the dream home they envisioned, with a little help from Sharer Design Group.

Modern French Provincial

This beautiful French Provincial home is set on 10 acres, nestled perfectly in the oak trees. The original home was built in 1974 and had two large additions added; a great room in 1990 and a main floor master suite in 2001. This was my dream project: a full gut renovation of the entire 4,300 square foot home! I contracted the project myself, and we finished the interior remodel in just six months. The exterior received complete attention as well. The 1970s mottled brown brick went white to completely transform the look from dated to classic French. Inside, walls were removed and doorways widened to create an open floor plan that functions so well for everyday living as well as entertaining. The white walls and white trim make everything new, fresh and bright. It is so rewarding to see something old transformed into something new, more beautiful and more functional.

トランジショナルスタイルの直階段のリフォームを検討するにあたり、特に気をつけておきたいチェックポイントとして、安全性、機能性、そしてデザイン性があげられます。家の間取りや家族構成に合った直階段デザインを選ぶことは、快適で安全な暮らしの鍵となります。選択した方法によってはリフォーム費用が高額になったり、工期が長くなったりする場合がありますので、あらかじめ取り入れたい機能の優先順位を決め、予算と相談しながらプランを選ぶようにしましょう。

安全なトランジショナルスタイルの直階段の種類を選ぶ

住まいの中でも直階段は事故が起こりやすい場所。特に高齢者や子供がいるご家庭では、まずは安全性が確保できるよう工夫することが大切です。直階段のデザインには昇降法別に「直直階段」「屈折直階段」「かね折れ直階段」などの種類があります。その中でも特に危ないとされている「回り直階段」「螺旋直階段」「曲がり直階段」を避け、手すりを設置する、踏み面に滑りにくい加工をするといった対策を取っておくと安心です。また、直階段の途中に踊り場を設けたり、人感センサーライトやフットライトを設置したり、部材にカーペットやファブリック、コルクなどの素材を選んだりすると、さらに高い安全性を確保することができます。

直階段のデザイン性と機能性を吟味する

直階段は存在感が大きくひときわ目立つ住宅設備ですので、デザインも慎重に選びましょう。例えば「螺旋直階段」は、小さなスペースにも設置することができるだけでなく、上階からの光を取り入れられるといった利点がある一方、上り下りがしづらい、方向感覚を失いやすいなどの欠点があります。「箱直階段」は、直階段下にトイレや収納スペースを設けることができるので、デッドスペースを有効利用することが可能になります。一方、圧迫感を感じる、設置場所が限定される、工費が高額になる、といった側面も考慮する必要があります。工期や予算が限られている場合、直階段全体をリノベーションする代わりに、古く痛んだ表面を重ね張りしたり、手すりの素材を木製からアイアン製やアルミ製にするだけでも、部屋の雰囲気をガラッと変えることができます。

家族思いの動線を作る

一昔前は直階段と言えば玄関に設置された玄関直階段が主流でしたが、最近では家族の動線を家の中心に集めるよう「リビング直階段」にリフォームする家が増えつつあります。どこにいても家族の気配を感じられる位置に直階段を移動させることによって、家族間のコミュニケーションアップにつながります。また、1階の水回りスペースと2階のベランダをより短い動線で結ぶと、洗濯物を干す作業が楽になり日々の暮らしの中で快適さを実感できるようになります。
