This Great Room features one of our most popular fireplace designs with shiplap, a modern mantel and optional built -in cabinets with drywall shelves.

A cosmopolitan mix of European and American styles create a livable home balanced with both modern and classic styles. Stylish leather pieces, custom furniture, and jewel toned textiles complement the cherry-toned wood paneling to add warmth and history to this traditional Russian Hill home overlooking the San Francisco Bay. As an intercontinental businessman, this bachelor needed a comfortable and masculine home to relax and recharge after returning from his European travels. Custom-designed chaise upholstered in a pale watery blue is the perfect spot to enjoy the iconic vistas of Alcatraz Island and Golden Gate Bridge. In the bedroom, dramatic garnet red couture drapery softens the room and ties in the playful British flag rug.

After my clients bought a sweet 1920s classic California Spanish bungalow in the Rose Garden area of San Jose, they came to me for some design guidance. We toured the empty house and I asked them what their style direction was and what they were thinking of doing. The heavily ornate, dark wood moulding and trim is original to the house and I naturally assumed that they would want to keep them. But I was thrilled when they identified themselves as modernists, liking clean lines and a lighter color palette. So we chose a strong white for all the dark trim and a warm neutral for the walls. With that canvas, we began layering on contemporary furnishings but with a sense of luxury that still feels traditional enough to sit in such an historic house. Custom drapes in a plum-colored Kasmir fabric set the tone for the color palette in the living room. Sumptuous ripplefold panels hang from a ceiling mounted Architrac allowing the full height of the arched window to be enjoyed from inside. The fireplace received a coat of a slate blue color from Kelly Moore. A comfortable sofa with mid-century lines plays nicely with a custom ottoman and a custom rug from Dalyn. And finally, discreetly presiding over it all, the Re ceiling light from Visual Comfort offers a bit of elegance without being fussy. Photo by Bernardo Grijalva

In June of 2015 an amazing sudden summer storm hit our area with violent winds, rain, and tornados. In the aftermath, my clients found, on top of losing 30 or so trees on their property overall, one had actually struck their home, piercing the roof in their great room. The great room was the very last room in their house that we hadn't done a complete overhaul in. Sure, we had tweaked it, purchased a few pieces of furniture, reworked the layout, but the colors and design were much the same as they had been for decades. Since things needed to be repaired and painted already, it was decided to jump in with both feet and totally rethink the room, change almost everything, and add architectural details that seemed to be missing in the original design from the 1980's. So not only were the color palette, rugs, and furnishings changed, but some very important architectural interest was added. For instance, a new, more elegant post was added at the back of the space, visually connecting the downstairs with the loft above. Also, three beaded beams have been added across the vaulted ceiling, as well as a large chandelier, giving warmth, light and visual heft to the peak and upper corners of the room. The fireplace was given a total facelift as well. New original artwork, which had inspired the palette for the space, is now highlighted inside a custom panel over a beautiful new mantel and fireplace surround. Even though this project started with something quite unexpected and scary, my clients tell me that the results are something that they just love and enjoy whether at home just the two of them, or entertaining extended family and friends. Starting with a blank room and a previously-owned mirror, this client purchased a gorgeous semi-flush mount light in her recently-painted room. From there, it was a blank canvas. We created a cozy living space that nods to both the fireplace and a TV with mirror-front console for family movies. We decided to make some functional top-tack draperies with sheers, helping to render the glare that usually comes in during the afternoons and give the space layered light control. With high performance upholstery, this light, airy, and steely-blue themed room is sure to stand the test of time.
