Studioteka was asked to gut renovate a pair of apartments in two historic tenement buildings owned by a client as rental properties in the East Village. Though small in footprint at approximately 262 and 278 square feet, respectively, the units each boast well appointed kitchens complete with custom built shaker-style cabinetry and a full range of appliances including a dishwasher, 4 burner stove with oven, and a full height refrigerator with freezer, and bathrooms with stackable or combined washer/dryer units for busy downtown city dwellers. The shaker style cabinetry also has integrated finger pulls for the drawers and cabinet doors, and so requires no hardware. Our innovative client was a joy to work with, and numerous layouts and options were explored in arriving at the best possible use of the space. The angled wall in the smaller of the two units was a part of this collaborative process as it allowed us to be able to fit a stackable unit in the bathroom while ensuring that we also met ADA adaptable standards. New warm wooden flooring was installed in both units to complement the light, blond color of the cabinets which in turn contrast with the cooler stone countertop and gray wooden backsplash. The same wood for the backsplash is then used on the bathroom floor, where it provides a contrast with the simple, white subway tile, sleek silver hanging rods, and white plumbing fixtures.

By far the most popular handle kitchen color is white. However, very often mixed with a contrasting color or purple splashback or feature wall cabinet.

In the Anderson kitchen, our goal was to create a space that blended in with the rest of the historic home. We chose walnut cabinets (for character) and white cabinets (to brighten the north-facing space) and a black Bertazzoni range to accent the iron windows. We created smart storage for countertop clutter; there's a hidden pantry next to the fridge where the microwave is tucked away, and there is a pull-out garbage area next to the sink, convenient to the back door exit. A new lighting scheme was essential, and we even snuck in a bench so that an in-kitchen dining space fit snugly in the corner. Quartz countertops are virtually indestructible, and we built the range-side cabinets to 30" deep to take advantage of the width of the room and maximize countertop and storage. After 17 years living with their original kitchen in their home in Maidstone, our clients decided they wanted to enlarge and completely redesign their kitchen. “We liked our original kitchen cabinets, but the kitchen space was too small and restrictive.” Asking the opinion of friends and family as well as visiting other kitchen showrooms in the Maidstone area, our clients were inspired by Ream’s 8,000 sq. ft. showroom in Gillingham with over 25 kitchen styles. “There is a nice family feel to the showroom, and everyone was helpful with our questions,” says Mrs D. Lara, Ream’s Kitchen Designer, worked on the kitchen layout and design. “Lara is an excellent kitchen designer, she had some really good ideas”, say Mr & Mrs D from Maidstone. “Lara is quick and fantastic at turning her ideas into 3D design. We have no hesitation in recommending Lara for her kitchen designing.” “A local building company carried out the structural work to enlarge the kitchen area and prepare it for the Ream fitting team to come in and install the kitchen,” says Mr D. "he team were friendly and efficient, and we were kept informed and updated by Emma, Ream’s Project Coordinator, the whole time.” “We are very happy with our new kitchen and can still scarcely believe the transformation. The kitchen looks even better in reality than in Lara’s design images and we also have had great feedback from our family and friends”, says Mrs D.
