The position of the kitchen is between the family TV room and the formal dining area; therefore the kitchen forms the core of this family home. Tall walnut cabinets add the warmth and richness of American Black Walnut to this otherwise very calm colour scheme. The walnut dining table and bar on the island incorporates walnut accents throughout the room, enriching the design making it feel welcoming and inviting.

Painted solid ash has been used to give a more pronounced effect with the wood grain. The dark grey island gives an exceptional counterpoint to the much lighter grey of the main kitchen. Add to that, the white quartz with a gentle vein running through it which compliments the doors and you have a truly remarkable finish to a classical kitchen. Solid oak in the seating and shelving area softens the monochrome feel to the kitchen, bringing warmth and a touch of the rustic into the space. Splashes of colour have also been added to give that personal touch that every kitchen deserves. The stunning black range cooker has been framed nicely by glass dresser cabinets done in a Georgian frame style with help from a continuous shelf around the extractor hood to enable the cornice to connect the two dressers together. To finish off the refined look of this kitchen, a double farmhouse sink has been mounted under the worktop and grooves routed to the left. By changing the shape of the peninsula to add seating and functional sink and dish washing areas, adding a wine refrigerator, range and secondary microwave convection oven, along with a large appliance garage, and thoughtfully planned cabinetry storage, now everything has its proper place. For this young family, their existing space wasn’t working for their lifestyle. Besides the aesthetics, they felt the kitchen wasn’t living up to its full potential. A list of their wants/needs included an open, sleek design that allowed their three children to eat at the island and have a place at a nearby desk to complete homework or watch television while dinner was being prepared. With the family’s main traffic area leading directly from the garage into the kitchen, it was critical to consider a place for the kids to place their schoolwork, sports equipment, art supplies and even bring in groceries. With all of that in mind, we added lockers for each child right at the garage entry, with the idea that the cabinets could be transitioned into additional pantry storage as the family matures. With the new open space, we were able to update the room using dark and light grays, on the cabinetry and walls. Combining the elegance of traditional design with the fresh and refined look of contemporary style trends, we mixed natural wood and stone and dark oak flooring with the contemporary look of paneled cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, sleek hardware, and a glass and marble tile backsplash. By mixing these materials the home’s traditional heritage is kept intact, but the young tech savvy family now has a fantastic space where they can gather for family meals and entertainment. Bringing the glass tile up to the ceiling creates a beautiful focal point in this fab kitchen. The owners chose a cleverly designed wall oven with side by side doors. While the convection microwave gives them the option of baking and roasting smaller items without using the full size oven.
